Thanks for your reply. According to my host, PDO is available and enabled on my server. What is it that leads you to this conclusion?

    Thanks

I do not see PDO and pdo_mysql in your phpinfo()
Should appear after pcre and before posix

Thanks. I have resolved the PDO issue, in that my custom php.ini files was inhibiting it. Please could you take a look at www.emd-research.co.uk/info.php and see if there are any other settings that would be preventing the manager from loading?

        Thanks

I have never seen the pdo_mysql like that in phpinfo()

Usually has a first line with PDO Driver for MySql Enabled in Dark Blue and second line with Client API version 5.0.92 in light blue.
But not sure this would cause the problem.

I would try a clean install with a new database. Not sure what else to recommend.
