Support/Comments for Babel 1.0-beta1

Hi folks,

thanks for sharing your experiences with Babel. I’ll try to make the main modifications this week, that means:

– css-path more generic (cf smooth-graphics remarks);
– consolidation of my php variables (’isset’ and so on, hope it solves smooth-graphics problem);
– a snippet that lists all selected contexts in Babel properties (considering the remarks of nklsf), to deliver quick links between the translations in the frontend, with nice context-switch maybe with a chunk-based template when I got time wink

@albertosanchezm, is your problem solved?

Great plugin! I’m running it on modx 2.0.4-pl2, but all I see is: "Please configure all the Babel properties in the plugin properties tab and clear the site cache."
I’ve commented the if ($property == ’not configured’) block from babel.class.php and now everything runs smooth, as advertised. (Of course, I’ve set up all the settings in plugin properties tab and so forth).

Can you enlighten me in this issue?

You’re sure that you also gave a number for the TV settings "identical_tvs"? This field can’t be empty. For me that works: http://screencast.com/t/HkiZq3y2l
Make sure all these properties are right. If it just doesn’t work then, please give us some more informations about your install process of babel.

To be honest, no, I haven’t wrote anything in that particular field. Should I write something even I don’t have any TVs yet?

In current release this is mandatory to work correctly. Had same problem, too, first. Set `0` as a value in this particular field to make it work proper. MODx doesn’t give 0 as a ID, so it should work fine with that.

Hmmm... Blank page on Create translations and this message in the logs:

PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function getValue() on a non-object in /opt/www/modx-2.0.4/core/components/babel/babel.class.php on line 141, referer: http://10.0.1.164/modx-2.0.4/manager/index.php?a=30&id=16

This is when I pus 0 in identical_tvs.

Line 141 is:

$tv_value = $tv->getValue($base_doc_id);

Later edit: Of course, I had to put the TV I already have, which is the babel_ids TV (ID=1) for this to work.

Exactly, the ’identical_tvs’ property must be configured, like the two others. You can just leave this property void when you don’t have TV’s to replicate in the other contexts (the ’babel_ids’ TV is separately replicated). I explained that in the doc, but it don’t seems very clear. I’ll put a void value by default for this property for the next release.

I have set up one modx revolution with multiple domains. So my contexts look like so:

domain1.tld - en
domain1.tld - de

domain2.tld - en
domain2.tld - de

domain3.tld - es
domain3.tld - fr

Is it possible to use Babel on a multiple domain setup? So when I edit "domain1.tld - EN" it only creates new document "needs translation" for "domain1.tld - DE".

Hello luckyred,

no matter if your contexts are setup to use multi domains, sub domains/folders… babel works for multi contexts

By the way, beware of special caraters in contexts’ names (ie. -.), not sure it’s allowed/supported (had some troubles earlier)

I actually meant it a bit different.

Those domain1.tld, domain2.tld and domain3.tld have different content.
And the content within each domain should be translated in 2 or 3 languages.

Is there a way to do this with babel? As far as I can see babel uses ONE context to build derivates.
Now I need to have different base contexts.

EDIT: As of now I have duplicated the snippet, renamed it to "babel2" and keyed in the properties.
Translations do work. But this is not updateable through package manager.

I think it is possible to duplicate the whole babel component and rename the functions, but this way I cannot either update Babel via Package Manager.

Any other possible solutions?
