David, you can already choose editors on a user-by-user case: Users > Manage users > User Settings tab > Editor to use

I’m not much of a programer, but as a designer I like the idea of the WYM Editor http://www.wym-editor.org/.

I’ve always wondered how we were supposed to maintain a consistent look across the site while allowing for site wide color/style changes during seasonal holidays. I mean what are you supposed to do when one editor thinks his article titles should be bold and the second thinks his look better italicised.

We definitely need to come up with an easy way to limit FCK Editor to a specific style sheet or else help WYM do some conversion to FireFox and other browsers.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that was one more thing on my wish list.

You can remove those option altogether from the FCK menu, just leaving the format dropdown for setting <p> or <h-whatever> tags, and those get styled from the CSS file. The bold and italic buttons just set <strong> and <em> tags, so you can style those in the CSS too.

Sorry to come late to this conversation, but I just recently found MODx. (My parents tell me I’m not slow -- I’m "special".) Anyhow, my two cents: WYM Editor is brilliant, and it’s heart-wrenching to me that they haven’t made headway on a Firefox-compatible version. I think the idea of a WYSIWYM editor is completely simpatico with a clean-code-centric CMS like MODx -- the idea of WYSIWYG is so antithetical to good coding, and (as WYM Editor has shown) WYSIWYM doesn’t have to be un-user-friendly.

I don’t know if you all are still considering XStandard, but, even though it does output nice code, the whole idea of installing a client for an online editor just seems wrong to me. I did play with it a year or so ago, and I liked it, but the whole idea of it just rubs me the wrong way. (Plus, a year or so ago, anyway, it output a comment at the top of the XHTML it generated saying something like "Generated by XStandard blah blah blah...". Who needs that in your code?)

If I knew any Javascript, I’d chip in and help the WYM Editor guys. (Sometimes being "special" really sucks.)

WYM is cool but very IE centric now, which is not cool.

I agree with you Ryan, but the concept of WYSIWYM is pretty attractive to me, worth mentionning...

There is still a BIG gap in the user friendly editing of web pages, WYSIWYG generated code still being less than perfect, and syntax like Textile/Markdown being out of the question for non-tech users...

How come there is no semantic and standard compliant AJAX based WYSIWYG solution ?
So many great web apps and rich text editing remains the weak link of the chain huh
