I am a newbie to Modx (but not to CMS products in general), but not seeing much conversation here on e-commerce. Is e-commerce even considered a Module, Plugin, or Snippet in Modx terminology?
Is there any discussions on 3rd party carts that people have successfully used with Modx?
I saw some mention of CubeCart, and that seems to be it.
I do not mind working things out on my own, but I am sure there are folks out there who have integrated payment gateways and shopping cart programs with Modx and have already taken their lumps...Can I hear from you guys on some dos and don’ts before I pick a shopping cart product and get started???
I would like to have a product that can do the following:
1) Support about 20 products. I am never going to use this for a large SKU solution - so a limited number of products is not a problem. (The products, descriptions, and prices do not change much) The presentation should have some combination of thumbnails and expanded images. I am selling a gourmet food product, so folks usually want to see a bigger picture, alternative views, a food label, etc.
2) Figure if sales tax is required and to calculate it automatically
based on "Ship To" destination (This is important...my current solution relies on the honor system to check the box if tax should be assessed, and that just does not work).
3) Nice if it could also access UPS, USPS, or best yet, DHL shipping tables so it can auto calculate shipping costs for standard sized boxes going within the US weighing 1-26 pounds.
4) Might be able to present its pages using a CSS that I have created for my regular Modx content pages. The the less I have to mess with its presentation, the better.
5) Has a forum/dev community support infrastructure
Any ideas for me folks?
Thanks in advance - Jon
There has been
talk about e-commerce, and there’s even a module called
ShopX built by Susan Ottwell. It’s not a full fledged e-commerce solution (yet) but it will be enough for most SME wanting to sell online.
Anyway, if I understood correctly at one point Ryan was involved with OSCommerce, I guess he has a good take on which ecommerce solution would better be chosen to build a full fledged ecommerce module. But if I recall correctly (can’t find the discussion) he does not value opensource ecommerce solution very high (please correct me if I am wrong, Ryan). The best way would therefore maybe be to expand ShopX

Would that be ZenCart ?

No. I haven’t been there for a long time.

I misread, thought you were working on an integration of an existing solution, not on a different ecommerce application altogether ! If it’s "MODx ready", even better

I definitely value open source ecommerce, it’s just that the core and other internationalization issues are a priority at the moment.

Curious, will this shopx be a mod ? a snippet ? a chunk ? a template ?
