I am building a site that will need a calendar in which administrators can post particular events. The site will include a page dedicated to displaying the calendar. In addition to the Calendar page however, the site Home page will also need a short list of upcoming items that have been entered in the calendar. So for instance, there will be a section on the Home page that automatically looks at the calendar, and then lists the next two (or maybe 3) upcoming events. I know there is a snippet that allows you to pull data from a google calendar and display it in a separate list, but what if you do not want to use the Google calendar in your site?
What is the best way to achieve this sort of dual calendar functionality?
Thanks folks.

I would suggest using CALx on your calendar page.
To get the events to display on your homepage you could simply use a ditto call. I basically used the same idea (although the calendar and events are on the same page) at www.spevco.biz.

You can try this one
http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,26825.0.html. There is a link to a demo.
It is a System to create, edit, show calendar and other Datas from Database-tables. Tomorrow I want upload a new version with some bugfixing and projectfiles for creating and editing documents with TV-based Dates. So you can edit, create and display easy-event and also calx events in the frontend. You can generate Daylists, Weeklists, Monthlists, Yearlist and monthly calender views.
It is still in development, but you can try it.

Thanks folks. I will look into these different possibilities.
The Spevco site is very cool by the way. Seems like there may be an issue with it in the latest version of Firefox for Windows though. On most of the pages, the content is barely readable since it sits directly on the page background. I know there is an issue in Firefox where page content can flow over the bottom of a page wapper. I recently had the same issue in a site i am building. I got around it by placing the following code just before the closing div of the page wrapper: <br style="clear:both"/>

hey,
yeah i am aware of the firefox issue on secondary pages with the background. It isn’t live quite yet, the biz top level domain was just registered for testing and setting up.

Taff - Just thought I would mention it since I checked out your site and noticed the issue.
As for CAlx, it looks good. The only problem is that all of the supporting documentation is in French -- a language I do not speak.

Another option would be FeedX. It is a great way to incorporate RSS feeds into your site. You can use it to grab the feed for your events.
http://www.stanback.net/code/modx/feedx.html
There are different plug-ins to handle popular feeds like (weather, flickr, lastfm, and google events).
I have used it and it works great.
DropboxUploader -- Upload files to a Dropbox account.
DIG -- Dynamic Image Generator
gus -- Google URL Shortener
makeQR -- Uses google chart api to make QR codes.
MODxTweeter -- Update your twitter status on publish.
thanks brian. i will look into that.

hey Marco,
you can find english documentation at
http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php?topic=17105 (Second post). That is what I used and it sufficed to get it setup.

Taff -
I did (I believe) exactly as specified in the English directions, but the Calendar just does not work. All I get when I view the page containing the CALx call (taken from the example code and modified appropriately) is a display of the call parameters themselves.
This is what I did:
1. I downloaded and unzipped the CALx files.
2. I created a ’CALx’ folder in the assets/snippets directory of my site and uploaded all of the CALx folders/files to that folder.
3. I created a new snippet called ’CALx’, copied the php code listed in the installation directions and pasted that code into the snippet.
4. I created two TVs, named them exactly as the two TVs are named in the instructions and set the same specifications listed in the directions.
5. I created a new chunk, called it ’calxcss’, and then copied the css from the ’default_style’ CALx css document into the new chunk.
6. I copied the CALx call code provided in the instructions and pasted it directly into the page on my site where I would like the calendar to appear.
7. I changed the name tied to the ’&chunkCSSName parameter’ to ’calxcss’ (the name of the css chunk I created in step 5 above).
8. I changed the names tied to the ’&dateStartTVName’ and &dateEndTVName’ to the names I gave the TVs I created in step 4 above.
9. I saved my changes and viewed the page. All I saw was the code associated with the CALx call. No calendar to be seen at all.
Again, I followed the instructions to a T. Any sense for what I did incorrectly, or did not do at all?
The call code I used is below. (I am running MODx 0961.p2 on a Linux server with MySQL 5 and php 4.11)
[[CALx? &getFolder=`id` &idDocYear=`ìnt` &idDocMonthEvents=`int` &dayStart=`int` &inactDay=`int` 〈=`string` &useTV=`bool` &dateStartTVName=`startDateOfEvent` &dateEndTVName=`endDateOfEvent` &popupType=`int` &popupSize=`int` &toolTipPosition=`string` &showOtherMonth=`string` &chunkCSSName=`calxcss` &getTypeProcess=`string`]]
Thanks much.
