Ok, I think the basic installation article is finished. If anybody reads it and thinks there are some other tips and hints I should add, please let me know.

    http://www.sottwell.com/calendar-installation.html

Now I’m working on a customization article.

About version 0.2b : it works now perfectly smiley

Just one thing though, there was a small glitch in the SQL file,

      I changed
      PRIMARY KEY ("calid")

      to
        PRIMARY KEY (`calid`)

      Anyway, great work !

@Susan: Thanks a LOT for this much needed article about customizing the calendar smiley

        Thanks Susan for the docs.

FYI, the placeholder inside it, I’m using {++}, instead of [++]. To differentiate the placehodler with my custome template.

To answer some part of your doc,

        # &accessMgr - manager groups allowed? [true/false] (true)
Answer: It will enabled a manager on the manager group that linked to the same doc group with the calendar will have access to admin interface for the calendar.

        # &dayMonthNames - comma separated list ??
        # &dayYearNames - comma separated list ??
Answer: It’s for the built in day naming for the calendar. Usually on dayYearNames, it will be "S, M, T, W, T, F, S", while on dayMonthNames, it will be "Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday". The purpose of giving the ability to chane this, it’s in case someone need to use this on another different language. For now it’s still limited to this day naming only, in the future, I might release a full multi lingual support for the calendar.

        @David, I’ll update those sql.
@Susan, I will add those fix for the manager role. I think it’s better to do it that way.

        Thanks

Wendy, the [++] came directly from your comments in the snippet. Copy/paste.

I’ll make the change in the article, though. As well as fill in the questions I still had (and would have figured out by trial-and-error eventually!)

Well, I have another question anyway. I can’t find anywhere where that $accessMgr value is used. huh

I set it to 0 in the snippet tags, and even changed the default to ’false’ in the snippet code with no difference.

Think I finally got it working! The patches helped. However, I’m still concerned about whether the patches are perfect or not...but that’s for another post! wink Anyways...

One question: When I attempt to add a new event by clicking on the little button on a specific day, I get a textbox prompt that says this:

Please enter the data source to be used (Code Abbreviation):

Err...what exactly is this for? Kind of threw me there.

Thanks a bunch! Keep up the good work!

lol, it looks ugly I know, but it’s just a way to match up with the extendability of this system. Remeber when I promise to have a flexible backend for the data source? I need some kind of gateway for the user to choose, whether they want to create a new event on which data source? Depending on the answer, they will have a different admin interface. I can’t seemt o figure out on how to make this pretty by providing a defined selection, instead of this plain textbox with a prompt like that. The more this calendar version increase, the more I’ll promise a better look for the calendar grin That’s the reason why I need you to help me out Jeff, same to Mark, Susan, David, Garryn, and the rest of the team. FYI, I have a limited knowledge of client side scripting grin

                  Allrighty, peace out!

I guess I’ll have to write a third article on managing the calendar.

Now that I’m beginning to understand how it works, I’m wondering how difficult it would be to fine-tune the management permissions so that a given user or user group has access only to his/its own entries.

For a long time I’ve been dreaming about creating a homework application that a school could use (being a mom who was often told by her children that they had no homework...) to publish homework assignments, both long-term and nightly.

Or would it be better for each teacher/subject/class to have its own page with its own calendar?

You could have the data source specified in the snippet tags with an argument, since a given calendar will be using a given data source. That would get it off the user interface and out of the user’s mind so he doesn’t have to stop and think about it every time he wants to make an entry.
