Why does PHPMailer not work with MODX? Its a real pain to get it to work. Also, why is it never the latest version?

I think PHPMailer should be a module sitting inside MODx so that an admin user can make changes to the SMTP settings or other PHPMailer native settings inside the CMS, without having to go outside and change a lot of code.

PHPMailer has worked fine for me in MODx, you can use it in a snippet by "including" the phpmailer class files and instantiating the objects you neeed. Since the settings (e.g. SMTP settings) are passed to the classes, you can set them with snippet properties or in a config file. I don’t think you need to change any code at all (except your own snippet or plugin code).
