Page variables?

I’ve just downloaded 0.9 and played a bit with it.
I noticed that on editing any page the template variable ’blogEntry’ is visible. This is confusing. Wouldn’t it be nice to have something like a ’page variable’? This could be implemented as an option in the template variable management (’always present’ - ’page-by-page-basis’). Then, on the page edit screen, have a button ’add template variable’ below all active (and editable) template variables.

That’s completely doable now. The way TVs currently work is that they are assigned to templates. Because a single template was used for the entire site, it will show up on every page. Does that make sense?

However, it doesn’t seem to be the optimal solution, as one now has to create a new template for every template variable that is actually a page variable in my definition.
Seems to make it unneccessarily messy for larger site. I also believe that a template should be something that governs the design, not the content.

I don’t neccessarily disagree with you either! Let’s just say it’s an issue we’re aware of and really appreciate any insight you may have on this issue and others as to how to make it work more intuitively. Sample code demonstrating such implementations is even better!

I’m agree with the needs of having page variables, instead of just TV. TV is a great approach, which I couldn’t argue more about the benefit of it. That’s one of the reason I’m using modX, but the PV(Page Variables) is also needed in certain cases.

But after thinking about the PV, I would like to suggest a new implementation of SV (Snippet Variables). The current snippets basically has their own SV being embeded on the syntax, but it will be great if it’s being implemented in graphical/manager wise. So in the ediing page, where there is a tab for snippets, we can choose which snippets that we are going to use, and when we include it on the page, it will automatically displayed all the available SV just like TV being listed in page editing tab. I know that a new consideration need to be taken, considering that the snippet can’t be used twice or more in the same page, because the manager need to be able to detect how many snippets being include din the template/page.

Ehmm...
Well the more I wrote this, the more I realize how hard it is to implement this, and it just make thing complicated.

So anyway, hope this can be a source of idea.

Very interresting indeed if you want more granular control over the information structure. I didn’t need such level of control yet, but it could arise...
