Thank you for you guys help to a novice guy like me.

Are you recommending I should switch to WebMatrix rather than using Xampp? If it’s simpler, easier and faster for realizing a local Web development environment, I will be all for it.

I tried as one of you advised and disabled IIS and UAC. Then a different error message as follows.
    ************************************************************
    Error logging on to http://localhost/modx-1.0.4/install/

    Page loading error !

    Could not connect properly !
Connection to the localhost server could not be established.

    * This site may be temporarily unusable, or the load to the server may be too high to be connected. Re-try after a while.
    * If other sites cannot be displayed, check the network connection of the computer.
    * In case the network is protected by the firewall and proxy, check if Web access by Firefox is permitted.
    *********************************************************************

As I thought the 3rd case might be the problem, I added Firefox in the list of firewall to be permitted. But I got the same error message as above.

I will go ahead and uninstall XAMPP and try WebMatrix.

    Thank you all.

      Absolutely. It just works.

        Hi rthrash,

Thanks for your guidance. I tried to install WebMatrix together with MODx from
        http://www.microsoft.com/web/gallery/MODxEvolution.aspx

First of all, it took awfully long (hours and hours and hours and hours to complete. The download transfer rate was ranging only from 5KB to 12KB/sec. This seemed bizarre. This kind of transfer rate never happened before. It got up to about 550KB/sec just once. Did it take you this long? I had to wake up the system from time to time as it went in a sleep mode. Then, an error message said "MySQL is not properly installed."

I used Google Chrome before. This time I am using MS-IE9, but the download rate is the same. and I set the "before sleep" time long enough (hopefully), i.e., 18 hours, to complete the download/installation.

Could you tell me what wrong with the way I am installing WebMatrix+MODx?

        Thanks,
        Ken

Subject: WebMatrix instead of Xamp 1.7.3.

          Hi Ryan,

This time, long hours of wait, it looks like MySQL was installed successfully. However, when I proceeded to install MODx 1.0.4, it failed with the following error message:
          ****************************************
          Web Platform Install

          ERR:
          The source is invalid.
          Cannot connect to the database
Unable to connect to any of the specified MySQL.

Sorry the following could not be installed.
          MODx CMS
          Already downloaded.
          Web Platform Installer Log.

          The following were installed successfully.
          MySQL Connector/Net 6.2.3
          MySQL Window Essential 5.1
          ****************************************

Any idea what went wrong? If avoidable, I don’t want to spend hours and hours to try re-installation.

Nothing is easy to achieve, I know, and my system environment should be quite different from yours.

May I ask what’s the difference between Wampserver and Xampp? If the former is less problematic, I am willing to try it out.

My primary purpose of using MODx is to quickly launch a Website, then to learn deeper and improve it later with advanced features, and I have done about 80% on-line, using the Swansong template. I needed to look into Wayfinder deeper in order to implement a better menue structure, but Otienos advised we should not try out his tutorial exercise on-line. Although I don’t know what kind of problems would be on-line, I also prefer developing off-line until it becomes ready. That’s the only reason I want to prepare a local environment on my PC. Isn’t there a simple way to achieve it?

          Thanks,
          Ken
