b03tz, your post prompted this noob to Google xPDO and read about it. OMG! I have got a tiger by the tail here!

Maybe this topic’s title should be changed from "What did you use before MODx?" to "What did you use before MODx Revolution?" because Revolution’s object orientation will make tons of difference to lots of people.

For instance, I had been wondering how I would integrate general DB access into a MODx site. That appears straightforward in Revolution, whereas I figured I would create and maintain ad hoc MySQL snippets in Evolution.

I look forward to finishing my current document-oriented project based on Evo 1.0.4 and moving on to more data-oriented projects with Revo!
I looked just like that in 1964.

Trust me, if you don’t know Revo yet...you’re in for a wild ride.

Since i started learning / exploring / using it...i’m just amazed
about how well thought through this all is...since i have experience
coding a framework myself...i’m just amazed.

I truly fell in love with this script!

Database is very very straight forward in revo...In my world...SQL
doesn’t exist anymore. Only an input XML scheme...and the joy of
      working with objects.

I would encourage you to install a Revo somewhere to play around with...
Create some manager pages...a little component...you’ll love it!

        Hi folks,

I too think the poll should have check boxes instead of radio options as I’m pretty sure most of us tried lots of alternatives before finding MODx. I voted for blogging CMSes because that is what I used most. But I tried everything in the poll (and more), except the *nuke ones.

        Best regards.

i just used css, html and a bit of php. I usually use static web site for a long time. Then i started using joomla and so on started using different CMS. There is a lot of things to do in web design.

i have clung to static sites as long as possible - because i did not want to subject my clients to the cms options that were available. ok, ok, i didn’t want to deal with the clunky nature of the available offerings either! over the years i did a few sites with drupal/joomla and test drove most of the common cms’s while looking for the holy grail. i knew there had to be a better way. then about 3 years ago i found modx and quickly committed to the cmf model. since that time virtually all my sites are in modx evo. being a designer and not a programmer, i love how easily i can go from developing a template to installing it in modx. for me, the learning curve was not bad at all and any time i needed a nudge in the right direction, the user community has always been there with friendly support. i also find it much easier to manage custom programming because it is easily labeled and separated from the core modx. and the bottom line? all my clients love the ease of use.

great vision and great execution - am looking forward to learning revo!

Before ModX Evo we used Etomite. But it took too long for Revo to be launched, so we went over to Umbraco.

Errrm, hello, first post. Couldn’t find an introduce yourself thread.
Well I did but it was locked.
                Anyway,,,

I’ve been using Joomla and Wordpress almost exclusively for the last 3 or 4 years (Worked with the web for 7) and haven’t thought to venture beyond. Used to use Zen Cart and phpBB but Joomla has had these areas covered for a while - sort of.

Wanting to step up a gear now and stop living by other peoples often messy codes and template styles as I often find its quicker to build something yourself than correct a bad job.
                As for upgrades. :’(

Thought I’d have a quick look at Evo to see what the deal is these days. I looked into Evolution a while back but admittedly didn’t really understand it.

Had a wonderful surprise when I came across Revolution.

                WOW! WELL DONE! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

I’ve not fully got my head around the back-end and general terminology but so far its a very exciting system. I’m a stronger designer than programmer but I hope I can bring some useful stuff to the community.
                See you all around!
