I would just like to say that I agree with both of you; Jason is correct in saying that MODx Revolution-powered apps have far more flexibility than any standalone-app. But, Compeek is right in saying
utilizing that flexibility is not always easy, or an option.
I do think that as Revolution progresses, more people will start to see the power of Revo-driven apps like Discuss, but some people will still use targeted solutions like SMF.
To be honest, Discuss is not, nor ever was intended to be, a SMF-killer. That’s not my goal. I like SMF. But I also see the need for a quick, templatable, powerful solution specifically for MODx that offers SSO. (
Also, let’s note Discuss is threaded, SMF is not.) Not everyone will use it. That’s fine. I’m totally ok with that. I just love writing software that people can use however they want to, without restrictions. So I jumped at the chance to write a threaded forum.

If Discuss turns into forum software that does all I could possibly want, then I will certainly give it a shot. Again, I’m not trying to discourage work on this project; I think it’s great that Shaun is making this. But when you have projects with tens or hundreds of contributers (phpBB) and a project with one (Discuss), it’s pretty difficult for the latter to compare to the others, especially at first.
While I agree partially, it’s also worth noting that adding too many contributors, or hitting the "code-bloat threshold", can have a deleterious effect.
Thanks for your thoughts, Compeek. We definitely appreciate them, and I hope you feel that we do. I hope to hear more of those thoughts, too, as we progress. We need them.
