We might have a better alternative.

You have to ;-) MODx without Ditto is like... a bike without wheels? A Keyboard without keys? You get my point laugh

That was our problem from the beginning. Create a new table for these BloX or use subdocuments. We decided for the documents because Bruno found a brilliant way to use Ditto for rendering them. So every feature of Ditto, all the functions for sorting, filtering and so on can be used. Downside is the addiional amount of documents, sure. But it works ;-)

Perhaps sometimes we will have our own bloX-Ditto, which can also list datarows from custom-tables with all the features Ditto has now for documents. Since we do not have it for now let us use Ditto and Documents for that.

Now, from my understanding of your explanation Jason, Revo will turn the documents/ressources into "real" Ressources which can be everything. A link, a file, a standard document or a special document without unnesseray fields. That would be great, so we could turn the document way into a special ressource way (modBLoX or whatever). Also Template Variables will be for templates, whereas I can put any setting to my special ressource. Correct? That would be perfect... Bruno what do you think?

That was my Idea, too. The admin which configures blox/Xedit decides which fields to show in the bloX and which fields the editor can edit in the Xedit-Control-Center and so on. There is no need of documentFields, you can choose what you want, it works also only with TVs or shortly with custom-table fields and perhaps sometimes with modBloXFields.

So we stay with Evo, finish it and then - with the help of Revo experts - we try to convert it for Revo.
Ok, assured lets finish it with Evolution, even though the possibilities with Revolution are tantalizing.

Let’s go to make it OOP as much we can tongue

Ditto has been partially converted, but some features will simply be "lost in translation" and so will not be available, at least immediately.  However, as hinted at by splittingred, there will be alternatives available in the next few days that should demonstrate the power and flexibility Revolution brings to the table.  I think you will see that the whole game has changed, for the better.

I’m also going to be introducing a new add-on toolkit that provides a small suite of reusable components to emphasize the importance of having small, modular pieces that can be used to construct a variety of complex web applications.  It will also reinforce how MODx allows developers to work the way they want to without ever touching the core code or being forced to do something in a particular way.

And maybe it’s just because I’m a developer and not necessarily a good "end-user", but I have a different metaphor for the MODx without Ditto subject.  To me MODx without Ditto is like a great computer without Microsoft Windows on it to render it slow and clumsy (though granted robust and easy to use)1.  Sometimes you just need to try a new operating system to see the machine’s real potential.

BTW, my standing joke with the team is that my epitaph will read, "I told them not to use Ditto for everything!"

1 IMO, the ease of use and efficiency of both Windows and Ditto decreased as the number of features increased...

Agreed. As long there are alternatives I am fine with that. Of course Ditto isn`t the fastest way to generate listings, but well, Ditto does its job. If the alternatives are more modular, faster and although easy to use without coding new lines for every single purpose everything is okay.

As an FYI, Ditto may or may not make it to Revolution. tongue We might have a better alternative.

I am eager to discover that, since I confess I use Ditto extensively with 0.9.x... which means like many others I’ll have to be able to migrate my sites to Revo in due time. I hope this won’t require to much coding skills tongue

The replacement of Ditto is a must. The complexity of it impairs its usefulness. The fact that it takes a whole website to figure out how to use it is a clue.

This replacement will be vastly different: lightweight, simple and tremendously more flexible (a true MODx trait).

I can’t wait till it its released.

Please note: Jay has had lots of experience with the new component, and was a former Ditto devotee as well. So he speaks from experience. wink

                      Neither can I !

Ditto has been a killer snippet for 0.9.x no matter what perceived complexities there was (I never found it too difficult), believe me I have extensively used the matching Drupal module (know as Views) these past months and though it’s very powerful (probably more than Ditto, I confess) it has a steeper learning curve (as anything Drupal, when you want to customize, has...).

I am very happy to know that there is a new way to handle content listing, filtering and sorting, I hope this uses modx tags and not pure PHP but that’s the webdesigner talking here... if on top of that it’s not overcomplicated, uses less resources and scales better than Ditto and is even more flexible than Ditto was then kudos and I’ll be on top of this ASAP when it’s out of the gate smiley

One thing I have found useful with Drupal’s Views is two things missing in Ditto : the ability to include items relationships and to easily pass arguments in URLs...
