As pumped I am to learn Revo and loving it - I wont sell
    my clients Revo sites yet(!)

I like to keep my words --> http://4up2date.info/just-let-me-do-it.html
In EVO I can do more than what my clients are inquiring and I can play with
    xPDO as a standalone library.

Revo is on my localhost until I know it good enough. This is an awesome

Absolutely. It should be required reading for all MODx newbies. It also explains very eloquently why I had to put the "Please don’t email me with questions" note up on Bob’s Guides. wink

Shaun’s comments are, as you say, right on. But they are irrelevant to this topic. I managed internal support groups in a software research and development environment, so I feel qualified to comment. One does not want highly qualified software engineers spending ANY time responding to users’ problems. That’s what support staff is for. Developers and researchers have other priorities. It’s a fact of life that Shaun attempted to express (and he did a good job of it).

So, I ask, what is the relevance?

I’ve chosen to use Revolution. I know Shaun (and the the other developers) are not going to answer my questions if I run into difficulties. So what! I’ll either figure it out myself (or other people with a like mind will help me), or I’ll run into a brick wall.

I happen to like the architecture of Revolution and have no interest in "Evolution", even if it appears to be able to handle what I want to do. As I prefaced my remarks, this is simply one person’s point of view. Similarly, for whatever it’s worth, I use Windows 7 on one of my computers, because I need to. But "Windows" is not my primary operating system and currently is unlikely to ever become my primary OS... but I try to remain open and think that perhaps it could be. My choice happens to be OS X (or Linux, or any other "Unix-based" OS).

You’ll get plenty of response from Jason and Shaun and the rest if you use the forums and the IRC channel. They are all quite active there.

Jason, Shawn and all other developers are VERY active on these forums. Thank you all for your support as I am sure many people would be totally lost without the devs for Revo. In an ideal world they should be free to do what they do best but I think they have struck a good balance. As more people become more familar with Revo others will be available to help in the forums.

Thanks to all devs and a HAPPY & PRODUCTIVE NEW YEAR to Alllllll---

              Hi,
Because the potentional of Revo is excellent, I’ve been doing my best to hang in there with Revo during its shakedown cruise, despite my lengthy list of minor beefs.

One of the exciting things about it is the multisite potential. I have a new client, with whom I discussed pro’s and con’s of Evo and Revo, including my own limited experience with Revo. They decided to go with the new codebase, and I put together a site for them.

But now I’ve backed myself into a corner - they are intending to use multisite for managing a bunch of related sites. I did testing on my own site to see if I could get multisite working. I have Revo in a subfolder on my site, and to test the multisite config, I aimed a subdomain at the same folder. It worked just great, and I reported this to them. But then later, I tried setting up FURL’s on my subdomain’s context, and no links work.

I posted to the forum with copious details, and one nice person took a shot at it, basically reiterating all the standard steps for setting up contexts. I had done all that already, though, and got no further replies. It’s possible a full domain will work fine (as opposed to a subdomain), and they also have a different server. So I’m probably above my paygrade here.

So now this client is asking me to continue with more work, and I’ll probably have to give them bad news that I can’t say with confidence that FURL’s with contexts will work. Not a good feeling. I’ll probably report what I found, and offer to see how it all works on their server.

I’m not looking for an answer here, as it’s way off-topic. My point is that one must be especially self-reliant to plunge in with a new system. The system itself may perform weirdly, and also Revo experts with time to reply are fewer.

I recently migrated my personal site from Evo to Revo, and I love it. The drag-and-drop features make up for the slower speed of the UI, and the programming model in Revo is far superior. I have yet to encounter anything I could do in Evo that I can’t do in Revo -- for example, I was using a 3rd party snippet in Evo that doesn’t have a Revo version, but I was able to write a snippet that actually works better for my purposes using just a few lines of simple code. XPDO FTW!

That said, we use Evo at my day job and will probably continue doing so until there is a migration tool. Evo is good enough and does everything we need, and from a business perspective I simply cannot justify the time expense of the current migration process. So for me, Evo isn’t dead and I’m glad it’s not, it’s a great system and works well for us.

It would be very nice to have a good migration tool.

                  Yeah. MODx Evolution.

Revo is getting a lot of attention in the forums mostly because it’s still fairly new and has a lot of ironing out to do, not to mention the time it will take before enough people get used to it to not need constant handholding. On top of that, documentation for it is still a bit spotty.

Evo is far from dead! I only work with Evo yet I have to turn down offers for work every week. The latest version about to be released, 1.0.5, has some fantastic new features that will definitely make it more interesting to work with. I still haven’t had the time to get familiar with them all.

These are very very useful features:

                    Improvement #881: Improve Template Settings

I think perhaps the most powerful new feature that will refresh all of Evo’s 9 lives will be the custom TVs.
