Dysfunctional Modx Database (Please help!)

Since the host appeared to be the problem, I decided to test out the site on another host, just to see what would happen. I did a clean install, tested that it worked, and imported the database. At first things looked like they should within the manager, but the moment I tried to expand a container, the resource tree and the files tree stopped working. They just look empty as I mentioned before.

I am just grasping at straws here, but I am wondering if there’s something in the database that caused the site to suddenly fail. I know this sounds really stupid, but I am willing to try anything to save this site.

So my question is, what are the bare minimum MySQL tables I should try to salvage from my old install? I am a n00b with this backend stuff, so that’s why I am here. These are the things that I would like to keep:

-Resources (the most valuable thing there is)
-Templates
-Chunks
-Custom snippets that I created within the manager (though I can salvage those manually if need be)
-Template Variables and the contents

Did you update the workspaces and clear your cache? There are a few paths stored in the database, so it’d be good to follow the instructions provided here:

Yes, I did. I triple checked that, too.

Did you re-run the setup utility? You have to copy in a setup folder from the same version of MODx that you’re running. That cleans up all sorts of problems, including ones like what you’re describing with portions of the manager not visible or not functional.

This sounds more like a javascript issue with your browser. Have you tried completely clearing your browser cache (sometimes browsers can be stubborn about holding on to cached .js files) and cookies for the domains? Is there any way for you to check for Javascript errors in your browser? Are you sure all those picky extJS .js files got uploaded properly? It only takes one line with the wrong cr/lf characters to turn the whole script into one big comment.

As I mentioned in a previous post, the site was functioning properly for several months, then my client logged in to edit a resource on Thursday and the manager and the site stopped working when she saved it. The site just throws a 500 error, and the manager doesn’t show the Resources or the Files tree as containing anything. I can look at the activity log, and see that all my client has done is add new pages and edit existing ones over the months that she’s had manager access.

My latest attempt was to do a clean install (I uploaded a zip file of MODx and unzipped it on a different server), then imported my database. The install functioned correctly until I imported my database.

I don’t know if this is relevant, but this isn’t a huge site like some of the ones I’ve seen mentioned here in the forums. It has maybe 180 resources.

Hmm. I see your point; it sounds like your site_content table may be corrupted. Have you tried checking and repairing it in your domain control panel?

That totally worked! The site now works, and the manager is functioning flawlessly....unless I turn on friendly URLs. If I turn on friendly URLs I get the 500 errors, and the resources/files tree looks empty again. I checked, and my .htaccess files are correct. I re-ran set up but that didn’t work. I’ll do some more digging.

This is great though. This is 99% better than it was before. I’ll just try not to turn on friendly URLs until I figure out what’s going on.

It sounds like something may have changed with your host. If you type some garbage into your .htaccess file temporarily and save it, do you get a 500 error? That would mean that your .htaccess file is being parsed, which would be a good thing if you plan to re-enable friendly URLs.
