[Solved] Importing old websites: Why are ä, ü, ö are not shown properly?

Do you know what your original HTML used suggest you try that first.
If that does not work.
Change to UTF8 and see if it is viewable in browser.

I would not suggest importing until it renders properly in browser.

I am just working on logic here not past experience.

Now I tried to change the field "content" of "site_content" to utf8, but this results in the error "#1283 - Column ’content’ cannot be part of FULLTEXT index"

Therefore it seems like I cannot change the charset of my database...

What type of access to your host do you have I only know cPanel?

Can You create a new database?

Can you afford to Delete everything?

Yes. I think I will make a new installation with a new database. Hope this helps

See if you can create Database with UTF8 before running setup in Revo Install.

Yes, thanks a lot. I think it is worth trying. A new installation takes just about one hour, therefore it is no problem if it doesn´t work.

The database is utf8 and the "Collation" too

Imho it doesn`t matter which charset is set in your HTML-head, it is rather important which charset the document/file has. So open it with any code editor and change the charset to utf-8 (I suppose it is some windows ansi stuff). It is important you run a good editor which converts the Umlauts rather than destroying them.

OK, I made a new installation. And now the Umlaute work. Nevertheless as MadeMyDay mentioned the import-quality depends strongly on how the imported file is saved before.

Having still some problems my question to MadeMyDay: What editor can you recommend for Windows? At the moment I use Openoffice-Writer.

If I am correct the editor should code every Umlaut correctly, but not adding a <p> at the beginning of every line...

Maybe there is an editor which can convert iso-8859-1 to utf8 automatically?

I think NetBeans will let you select the character set, and it won’t add any extra baggage if you’re writing plain HTML in it.
