I will be darned.
It came back when I upgraded to 2.1, but let me clarify this first. This was not modx problem.
the problem was always specific to a particular machine, and this time I could not login with Chrome. but IE8 worked just fine.
I will cut all the details here. How I was able to fix is below.
I ran PC Pitstop’s PCmatic that includes registry clearning and so forth on that machine, It found and fixed about 1000 registry entries and removed some unused files, cleaned up cache and tweaked internet parameters etc.,
After that, no login issues (and honestly I don’t know which part of the PCmatic actually addressed this issue. Could be registry entry, could be cache, could be internet parameter settings. sorry for not being able to be specific)
