Package Management not working with MAMP?

Wait a minute.

So you got the Package Retriever to load, and you downloaded some packages?

- Do those packages show up in the Packages grid?
- Are there corresponding *.transport.zip files for the Packages you downloaded in core/packages/?
- If so, are there directories that match? (ie, quip-1.0.0-pl/ for quip-1.0.0-pl.transport.zip)

I got the Package Retriever to work. I could navigate to the MODx repository site to pick Ditto and Breadcrumbs etc. I then downloaded them. The extracted zip files showed up in my Mac’s Downloads folder. I then moved the archives into the MAMP/htdocs/siteName/core/packages folder. I can then see these archive folders by clicking on the FILES tab on the left side of the Manager window.

But trying to navigate to the "Search Locally for Packages" using the Package Management system never connects to to the snippets I have downloaded? The system will flash briefly but nothing shows and the words "No Data to display" remains under the NAME window?

Whoa now, wait a minute. That shouldn’t happen. It shouldn’t download to your downloads folder; you are doing this from Package Management within the manager, right? It should just extract it to core/packages/. What browser are you on?

I think we need to iron out your process here; if you’re downloading packages straight from browsing modxcms.com instead of using , then you need to make sure you:

a) are downloading only *.transport.zip files
b) and are uploading them to core/packages/ only

You should just be downloading from within the manager. If it’s not downloading correctly there, then we can debug further.

I am using Safari 5.0. When I get to the package the downloaded archive is going to my system downloads folder. So thats a clue. Its not showing up directly in the Revo manager...

I will try Firefox as well...

OK, here is a big update: it works in Firefox...

But I still had to go to the system Downloads folder and manually move the wayfinder-2.1.1-rc1.transport.zip folder into the core/packages folder? The Revo system should receiving the folder directly, no?

Be advised that I might be doing something stupid. I have made bone headed errors before. But have you heard of anyone one else having issues with the Package Management system while using MAMP?

OK, after playing with this a little more I am making some progress. I was using the links in the "Most Popular" heading and following to the MODx site and downloading from there.

Shaun, I watched your Vimeo video, Introduction to MODx Revolution, Pt. 1, and that was very helpful. By using the Package Browser on the left side and clicking through the various category folders would then present the various packages with the "Details" and "Download" links. Hitting "Download" made the download happen within the Revo Package Manager system directly. I tested this in Safari and Firefox and it works.

I guess I am guilty of not really reading the "Choose a repository from the left to begin browsing this Provider" statement above the Most Popular and Newest Additions list of links. But following those links takes you you to the MODx repository which takes you to the download which downloaded the archive into the system Downloads folder.

I could be the only one to misuse this navigation and not find the "Choose a repository from the left to begin browsing this Provider" instruction bold enough? If so, then cue the Homer Simpson voice: "Dope!!!"

Excellent point. The core developers don’t usually notice stuff like that because they already know how it works. In fact, I almost always know the name of what I’m looking for and put it in the search box.

Visually speaking links will stand out more than regular text. In this case I was expecting download links. The list on the right presents common snippets we already know as links. I immediately navigated to those links and they took me to the MODx resource page like you would normally follow in Evo?

Still, I wish I read the Package Management page more carefully.

But assuming all users will follow expected or familiar paths will not alway work out.

Also, the cryptic message

Downloading Packages requires you to either have cURL or sockets installed on your web server. If you do not have these installed, the list of packages will show blank.

will only make sense to users who know what cURL is or does. Providing more info and tips to resolve missing cURL components would also be useful...

I was also confused by the links at the bottom at first. Hiding them from Revo users might be a good idea, and/or replacing them with a single, less salient, link to modxcms.com/downloads.
