Just as my head was inches from the wall...I found the answer to what was keeping the latest installation of TinyMCE (rc2, still) from running properly...
when you enable the editor, then enter the name in System Settings-Editor to use, you must enter:
TinyMCE
or else it doesn’t work. Small situation with using proper case in the name; I was improperly entering: tinymce .
