The approach in this Nettuts tutorial (aimed at Evo but the theory is the same, just some of the tag syntax and snippets have changed) may help
http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/other/working-with-a-content-management-framework-modx/ - starting off with a clean html + CSS prototype, deconstructing it and then putting it back together in the system. Personally, I found this demo much more useful than looking at the (partially broken) sample site that you can install for Revo.

Thanks again odeclas,
That tutorial is very clear and helpful. Got past my nervousness now and have a full port of my site on localhost. Wow, made my eyes pop out when it first flashed up with a perfect css rendering. Multiple-nested divs no sweat at all!
And ’penny has dropped’ now on how to make good use of templates, chunks, etc... So logical and sweet. Close to CMS Nirvana I am sure. Haa.. Well done MODx team on creating an awesome piece of software.
