File Browser

I played around with this for a few minutes and it looks pretty cool. It would be great to see this available in modx.

Keep in mind that the current version is a beta and is probably missing some functionality. One of the things I noticed with it is the LDAP/Active Directory integration...which we don’t need right not. Doesn’t seem to be a way to disable it in the code so...that’s just one of the things that needs to be ripped out. I suggested that they change it to make it optional so we’ll see. Plus, as stated before, I suggested using a PHP-based progress bar instead of a Perl-based one. I’ve seen a few AJAX driven solutions in the works that might work for this so...again...we’ll see. The real trick is implementing user rights and user assigned directories...which we really need. I wouldn’t mind the ability to assign a default directory for front-end use as well to keep site files protected. Other than that, I haven’t had much time to really dig into the code and see how it works. I really want to make sure that we can use this thing without hacking it too much. One last thing I mentioned on the Relay site is the idea of implementing an API that would make integrating Relay with a CMS and/or user database much easier. Lots to think about. So...we’ll see (lot’s of these, huh!).

One last note. Did a little research on the PHP progress bar. It seems that the PHP-only solutions aren’t all that great...and the ones that are require a little hacking to a PHP installation. So...based on what I’ve read, the better solutions pretty much always use a helper Perl script. I tested the one that comes with Relay and it does work quite well. I don’t think this is much of a stopper though since most hosting providers have Perl support anyways. And for those who run their own server, adding Perl support isn’t all that big of a deal. Though I will likely recommend that the requirement of the Perl script be optional and that a secondary method be used in that case. Other than that...doesn’t look too bad.

Very nice file browser. I like the idea of a download cart.

As Jeff mentioned above the most important thing right now is the need for access rights and user folders. It would be nice if the modx version could allow the admin disable uploads and emails

A user on these forums, mmjaeger, contacted me almost 4 months ago asking if I could help him developing his ajax file manager script. He offered it to use in MODx when done. I didn’t have time to help him that time so I suggested him to post to the forums about his needs, but he hasn’t yet. He has done the iManager and iBrowser scripts that can be integrated to wysiwyg editors like FCK and TinyMCE (i believe the newest etomite relese uses ibrowser). The iManager is a GUI wrapper to phpThumb which I’m planning to use modified in the gallery snippet in future.

Anyways, back to the file browser, I thought it looked pretty good, you can check it out here. I think he was needing help to make the features on the toolbar (create folders, search, upload files, etc).. he allready had another script for batch fileuploading through ajax, though. But i think the browsing is what currently works in the fmanager project (haven’t tested on anything else than FF). Also I think he was planning on wrapping the whole system eventually to these kind of window panels. It seems that the project has not gone anywhere though.. but if you guys decide to make a own file browser, maybe this could help?
