I will have the chance to look at modX for the next few days. Hopefully, it will help.

I found it baffling so far, to be honest. With no documentation for a beginner that assists in common English it does not make a lot of sense at the moment.

Will there be a guide coming out soon or should I just scrap modX Revolution for modX Evolution? At least there is a lot of info there and I can buy a book at Barnes and Noble. I prefer to learn from the written word, rather than going from site to site trying to piece together something.

I hate to switch to a lesser version but the new-fangled powerful version does me no good if I cannot figure out how to use it.

The basic principals of Evo and Revo are the same. Revo offers tremendously more flexibility. Perhaps it makes sense to get started with some of the excellent Evo tutorials found at http://modxcms.com/learn/it.html and when you’re comfortable there, transfer back to Revo.

So would you feel that the MODx Web Development book would be worthwhile for Revolution?

That book was written for a previous version of Evolution so maybe not. I have read in the forum somewhere that someone is writing a book for Revolution.

              Yep, that would be Bobray...

Start with Revolution, you can create a website just like in Evolution to start,
and then start learning the more powerful and intricate methods...

I have 3 weeks off, then I am back to school full time (at 48 years old). I was hoping to get something accomplished. I even tried looking for someone at the school who could use some extra money who was fluent in modX but came up empty as open source is usually not part of the curriculum. I would gladly pay someone to get this going so that it matches what I already have. Then I can learn once the book comes out. I have so much that I need to add to the site and have gotten so far behind, that it would be a waste of my time to add more content using ExpressionWeb. I need the database functionality of modX.
Oh well... I will see what 3 weeks brings.

My advice would be to install Revo and dive in. Any questions are usually answered very quickly here, and while documentation and tutorials are a bit scattered at this point you’ll quickly build up a list of links. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how easy the basic stuff is to learn, and the more advanced stuff isn’t that much harder. MODx does its best to stay out of your way and let you do what you want with your site.

The Evolution documents are even more scattered: and harder to find. And when you do find something it’s usually outdated information. I have found the Revo docs to be thousand times better and easier to find. A true luxury smiley Even if you’re not trying to make a blog, the basic tutorial for that explains almost everything you need to know to get going. All the most relevant information is also in the Wiki (at least most relevant for me) and easily findable.
