How many users who buy nice wine are using 800 pixel screens? I would bet not that many. A lot of designers who build centered designs with a fixed width like having the content be 960 pixels wide with a little breathing room on each side for laptop users...

Google Analytics is your friend/enemy (delete as appropriate)!
I found about 30% of visitors to a site aimed at teachers were using a screen resolution of 800px and 40% were still using IE6 or lower and only 4% used Mac’s!
Do we have a tendency to overestimate the state of the general public’s hardware/software based on our own set ups and preferences?

        Interesting...

I guess its always good to pay attention to the intended audience. Having spent a lot of time in school classrooms and observing the systems available to teachers its not that surprising to read those stats.

But how many sophisticated wine buyers are going to be 800 pixel IE6 users?

I imagine you’re spot on in your analysis of the intended audience.
We must be approaching the 1024px threshold, particularly if the target audience is fairly affluent.
No laptops or monitors currently being sold are below that are they?

I utilize Google Analytics. Right now we are about 9% of our users with 800x600 resolution. That has been dropping slowly, but as it stands is a large enough percentage that I am not going to alienate them with side scroll bars smiley

It’s not just size. A friend of mine has a 17" MacBook and has his resolution set to something or another greater than 1024x... and I can’t see anything on it. I have to reconfigure it to run at 1024 because my eyes are giving out on me. So you are beginning to approach the point where you’ll lose an ever-growing section of your audience as middle aged and older people start having the same problem.

I’m glad it’s not just me!
When I see a site with a font size of 10px (or less!) I know I must be much older than the target market.

well, I knew I was getting there when I noticed (with something of a shock) that the policemen, the firemen and my kids’ teachers were mostly younger than I was grin

The eyes only started cutting out on me in the last year or two. Can’t stay up half the night coding any more. :’(
