    Hi everyone,

I’m a designer dabbling in web site development, mostly using open source applications. I have a project in mind for a Site with a public relations focus. I need to create something that can be easily duplicated. That’s how I stumbled on to MODx over at opensourcecms.com

Does this system include a newsletter management system yet? How hard would it be to add integration with like PHPlist ? ( http://tincan.co.uk/?lid=294 )

    My basic needs are
    - an article system to add/edit/manage press releases (articles)
    - a way to add flash video content
    - PDF and Word docs downloads of articles
    - subscription management for email marketing (newsletters)
    - author/editor/administrator permissions based on groups (per client)

If anyone has any suggestions please reply.

    Best regards,

      Hi Overhaul

Well I am a CSS designer an pretty new to Modx myself. The program is great, its ideal for CSS designers moving towards dynamic CMS solutions.

Articles - I think the standard product will meet your needs. Its easy to post new articles and you can manage press releases with the publish date facility as well as specifying who can read these documents.

Adding flash in OK, but I am not sure if you can do this via editor.

Susan has a nice little document management solution listed on the forums, that may help you

There are a few email marketing solutions (not built into Modx) You could use any of the ones you like and integrate to Modx I guess by using bindings within a Template variable.

regarding permissions, take a look at the document section. There are quite a lot of controls for setting up user groups

Overall, as I have found it takes a reasonable amount of time for everything to sink in but I think Modx is one of the best products and its worth the effort

        Hi,

I noticed that this is the first time you post in the forum, after you registered in. Welcome to the forum!

To answer your needs, you might need to make a snippet to output a pdf or word doc.
As far as inserting flash video, you might wanna check fckeditor website to look for this ability. They have the option to do that, and I think it works just fine though, even though I never try it, but I believe it will work like the image editor.

About the newsletter, you might want to ask Mark Kaplan, he is in the middle of building newsletter, but I’m not to for sure about the current development phase for that thing.

Talking about permission, you got the right CMS system, we have a manager user that you can assign to manager group, and you can assign a document to certain document group, and you can use associate the document group with the manager group, so that the user under the associated manager group will have access to the document under the associated document group. Hope that’s anice short explanation for you. For more detailed, check the documentation. http://modxcms.com/manager-users-roles-groups.html

Question: What is this document manager that was made by susan? I never know of that, if someone could point me to the right thread, it will be great, thanks.

        Sincerely,

Hello! Did someone say my name? smiley

As for NewsLetter, development is rather slow mostly because creating all the management forms is REALLY boring! But I’m slowly making headway. It works right now, you just have to use phpmyadmin to set it up and manage each NewsLetter (yes it supports more than one!). I already wrote and tested the send functions and forms.

As for an ETA I have no idea. If anyone wants to help, that’d be wonderfull!

A while ago I got one of the php newsletters to work inside modx but it just wasn’t integrated enough for my end user.If you need the code that did that I would be happy to share.

One of these days I have to settle down and convert it into a module.

                That’s cool!

Can we use that file manager for our resources repository on modxcms.com? I would like to see a knowledge base and resource repository on modxcms.com. It will helps a lot of newcomer.

                Thanks

DocMan is really cool indeed. Unfortunately, we really need to have a couple of things in place for it to work seamlessly:

                  1) synchrnized user systems between SMF and MODx web users (still working on that).
                  2) versioning where any logged in user can add to the existing repository item.

The reason #2 is so critical is that unfortunately, things sometimes get abandoned (either temporarily or permanently) and developers move on or become unavailable. Instead of having multiple Repository items for essentially the same bit of code,  a versioning system allows multiple authors to contribute to the repository without having to manually maintain the repository on the core team’s part. Make sense?

Not really; I wrote it for a client who wants to be able to pass documents back and forth to freelance translators, and added the nested categories feature after considerable nagging. It could be used, I suppose, in a pinch, but would need some more work.

                    http://www.sottwell.com/index.php?id=24

                    Weblogin as filemanager, password filemanager.

I know, it’s a mess, the css needs working on. Someday.

#2 is easy enough, just make the webgroup that the forum uses the webgroup for managing files.
