BTW, the most killer layout technique I’ve found of late that does in fact achieve equal height on arbitrary columns comes from Alex Robinson. It also doesn’t use wrapper DIVs and is completely source-orderable. Pretty cool stuff to say the least!

As I said, CSS3 will bury tables with the advent the Multi-Column Module.

Have you ever seen this actually working with Firefox 1.5? It is truly beautiful.

Grab a new Firefox and give this a look, and don’t miss the on-the-fly resizing.

Is there a specific date set for standardization of CSS3?, or will it simply become more prevelant as browsers incorporate support for CSS3 in their releases?

Unfortunately, IE still holds almost 90% of the Web, and after 7 years it is still only in the "promising" stages of complying with CSS2, and isn’t even all that relliable with CSS1.

              LOL!!!
              It’s funny because it’s true [ * Homer Simpson]

Oh... Wait! that is truely sad. Microsoft should put together a team of developers and... what’s the word....uh... oh yeah, programmers... and they should work on this Internet Explorer thing that seems to be so wildly popular with the kids today!

              what’s that?

They do have a team of developers and programmers working on that very project?

              well??????

WHAT THE F*** IS THE G** D*** PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!

[one more exclamation point for good measure (!)]

I knew the website, but didn’t check it out lately : thanks for the pointer Ryan !

As for IE holding the web, of course : in France, most people don’t even really know what a browser is and they use what’s installed along with Windows... IE ! There is only one way to get out of this mess, play evangelist and carry around a FF on USB stick install to make a quick convincing demo (it often works this way !).

Thing is IE7 is not even remotely anywhere near full CSS2 support, in a way you have to wonder if MIcrosoft does not do this on purpose to sabotage web standards. They tried to lock you with their asp and aspx pages and there are still some MS web sites you can’t use with any other browser...

This is annoying and it pisses me off, most of the time you spend hacking CSS is for IE... In the corporate world (at least in France) the situation is even worse regarding IE. A lot of companies are still running some old version of windows (NT4 is still common... uhhh).

I totally agree. For the last year or so, I have been carrying around my old 128Mb USB drive loaded with the latest installer for FireFox, as well as Portable FireFox, and helping my less-than-proficient computer equipped friends and family install, use and understand the beauty of FF. Also, I work in a hospital, which has a mixed Win2k/WinXP network. I have installed FF on many of the computers, but several of them have some restricted permissions, so Portable FireFox works great!

Nice! I just downloaded Portable Firefox and Portable Thunderbird; I doubt if I’ll ever use it, but my partner has an awful time with browsers and mail when he’s travelling in Germany or England.

Maybe I can make my first contribution to the forum!

Over the last 2 years I have produced about 20 commercial websites, almost all are CSS-P and standards compliant. But I will use tables where there is not an alternative relaibale coding solution

I decided some time ago to abandon floating left /right columns or using other tricks and hacks. Instead I absolutly position my col’s and now use the excellent javascript from project Seven "A graceful Javascript alternative to "Faux Columns"

Why did I abandon using floating columns? - The primary reason for me was that having put a lot of time and effort into producing a really nice, clean, standards based design for the client I found I always wanted to clear a float somewhere in the main content (where an image was used) and of course, that meant clearing my left / right cols that were floated also. I have used Absolutely positioned columns for over a year now and find this method suits me best and is very cross-browser reliable (Oh, and I have not had a customer complaint from anyone who may not have javascript enabled) I always try to keep the footer text centred so in the event javascript was not on a users PC, they would not see the footer sitting below the content, but only the left and right nav overlapping the sides, where there is no text positioned in the footer.

This approach avoids the needs for single coloured tiled background images but still allows for easy coloring of the columns with just a line of CSS.

Please visit http://www.projectseven.com/tutorials/css/pvii_columns/index.htm and see what you think

Separately I have two new commercial orders for Modex, but not starting till Feb/Mar as I as still new to the product, The first site I am doing is our own business site and that should be finished by Jan and I am happy to submit once completed.
