While this is technically possible to have pinging and pingbacks there is one severe limitation and that is that there is no event trigger (built into) MODx that will allow the automatic pinging or anything when a document becomes published if you use the pub_date for posting later. It will work fine if you are publishing at the time of posting.

If you need advanced blogging features like pinging etc, why not use WP?
If you still need MODx for other, non-blog content pages, install both.

Are there any samples of forum users creating a cohesive site that is using both WP and MODx? I am interested in this idea.

Getting the two platforms to look the same so that the site does not look like two different halves would be an issue, no?

            Snug-A-Bug Blankets: Minky Baby Blankets

This is my wife’s site. It is running MODx on the main sections and WP for the Blog.

It should/will be is running on a shared CSS (although it is not just this time because I was doing some mods to the layout for the WP side and had isolated the copies.) I only recently replaced the template in WP with her current site template. (there are still come cross browser issues in safari.)

It is not a simple integration as I had built out the WP template by modding out the Kubrick based K2 theme in WP just in the interests of time. I don’t think that it would be impossible to share a template if one used chunks to build the templates and then built them in a simple function set in the WP template. Or, I guess one could always get the template out of MODx and then use regex to wrap/replace the WP content in MODx. For my wife’s site though it was pretty easy to build the template though since she really only has two templates, one with a sidebar and one without.

I didn’t also use Wayfinder for the menu since there are only three main documents and one web_resource. Again, one could use the MODxAPI for this.

              Interesting...

I created a site that had mostly static XHTML pages(Strict) and CSS. I then added a WP blog page but spent a lot of time making sure the all the presentation of the WP page matched the static pages. In the end it all looks just the same. It offers better flexibility than relying on the static pages with the WP system. Or at least I think so...

Having the power of WP and MODx in one site is an intriguing idea though...

I also could theoretically use a single (or multiple) static PHP template(s) and call it from its include location and use a snippets in MODx and includes or functions in WP to grab elements of the template. This is not so different from the way I was building static sites before MODx anyway.

I would much rather build out a more robust solution for MODx than continue to use WP (except for extreme professional blogger types). The only chief missing elements of WP for MODx are, anti-spam (there is a PHPClass for Akismet), pingbacks (I am working on this) and pinging (of news services) (there is one in the forum just not in English. The other issue is that there is no way to trigger events when files are published by MODx. I thing if someone wanted to build out a pseudo-cron plugin for MODx this could be gotten around.

Can you explain the "No way to trigger events when files are published by MODx" part? I take you mean separate from the onDocPublished event of which plugins can take advantage.

Yes. As far as I have figured onDocPublished only works when the document property Published is checked and not when its viewable pub date arrives so, things like pings and pingbacks would have to be done/enabled manually. WP and most blogging systems will trigger events on pubdate. It could be done another way if one wanted to use someone requesting the page as a trigger though for a plugin but if you have a low traffic site it won’t work so well. I am sure there will be a way to extend 097 to do this but for now there could only be workarounds.

I would be more than happy for someone to prove me wrong.

                    Cheers,

                    Jay

Pings seem to be the biggest missing link keeping folks from using MODx for pro blogs. I am not a big blog builder so I am not too familiar with the details of pro blogs. What else can WP do that MODx can’t?
