Why not use a wiki for documentation, repository, hacks, tips, etc?

it is hard to find spread things in the forum

We now have a complete file repository available at http://www.modxcms.com/download. We are considering a wiki for user contributed documentation.

I’m a new user arghhh! (I hate to admit it and get branded already) Anyway, I’m not a programmer, but a designer (and UI/app instructor for 10+ yrs) who’s trying to wrap my head around the realtionships between Temps, TV’s, Snips, Chunks, etc. I understand html, xml, css, some java, etc. so I’m not a complete moron. Besides I got MODx installed and running despite a few default permission snags (thanks to some straightforward posts)

Now, if I could only figure out how to activate snippets in a template. I started with the Friends Listing which was a breeze to stup the Snip and TV. Anyway I’ve searched hi adn low for the basics (or step-by-step) on the activation and html calls and I keep coming up empty handed. Basic documentation does a fairly good job distinguishing the various components but doesn’t really explain in "how to terms" the correct procedure for activating. A wiki probably would have saved me a few hours.

Now that the Repository is setup (way to go guys!!! seriously!), the next big help for new users would be a wiki IMO. I know some of the dev team have stated they are looking into a few different wiki programs for this. One thing to note, the MODx team makes sure all of their steps are well planned and organized. So when they do launch something- whether the Docs, forum, or repository- it is done very well.

All to say- it looks like steps are being made for a wiki. (Please correct me if I’m wrong). And great job so far guys.

I would be happy to see a wiki implemented documentation. Also when it is there, I would be happy to contribute to it as much as i can. For example I could do some translation work as I am fluent in German, Dutch and English.

Any way I think the wiki doc is a good idea, actually i was about to post a similar suggestion myself smiley

A wiki will be very useful I’m sure. I’m happy to contribute where I can. As I’m a new user my range of contributions will be small, but what I do insert will be written with people of very little experience in mind which could be seen as an advantage. Let me know if I can be of help.

I’ve done some more looking around and found the following:

                      http://www.opengarden.org/dekiwiki
                      http://www.viawiki.com/

Does anyone have any knowledge or feedback on these?

Maybe it’s a moot point by now based on the @zi comment below. Could someone please tell the community whether we should be offering suggestions for an interim solution to the "documentation conundrum"? I for one am getting mixed signals and have no interest in researching potential wiki solutions if "something" is in the works.

Actually its in plans, but for now 0.9.5 is a highest priority smiley, however you can post your suggestions about wiki softwares in modxcms.com Discussions and Suggestions.

                      Thanks.

I was thinking about this for awhile... when I first found MODx I thought it was really cool (I STILL do! laugh ) but I had no clue on where to start. I wasn’t sure if I was overlooking something, and when it came time to create a custum module, I couldn’t find any "guidelines" to making them so I more or less just started coding. I’m still somewhat a newb at MODx. tongue

Anyways, instead of having the developers add forum posts to the documentation "sometime" later, why not get a Wiki going? That way people can add tips and guides themselves, and it’ll be easier to update documents later. The nthere’s no need to sift through posts that have nothing to do with your question. smiley

                      eagleshout and ed,
Which wiki do you suggest we use? It’s been covered elsewhere, but I’d be curious as to which one you find optimal. Sorry that we contributed to your frustration and I look forward to your contributions.

I don’t know that I’m the best candidate for recommending a wiki that would adequately complement ModX, but I do like what PBWiki is doing with their product recently. Most notable is the support of API’s and the following:

                      Wikilets
You can embed a wiki page in a web page pretty easily, using either an IFRAME or inline-Javascript technique . . .
                      http://api.pbwiki.com/

Other recent news includes tagging support:
                      http://pbwiki.com/blog/

The drawback here is the subscription price for a large user base (up to $34.95/mo.) I’m sure there are open source wiki’s out there that support API’s and/or the ability to pull data from the wiki into another web page. How cool would it be to have an up-to-date ModX wiki that could be accessed within the ModX manager or anywhere else on the site?!?!?

Although, I see this discussion has been active in the past, I will try to find a better forum post to keep this discussion going. I don’t want to add confusion to this post, just reponding thrash.
