Yeah, just to chime in on this - VersionX 2 is in development.
It'll be at least ten times as awesome as VersionX 1 (not taking into account it fails to work in 2.1 there) and not only version Resources but also all elements.
And there's some fancy things I've got in my mind that I'm going to implement but not yet announce.
Just give me some time to work on VX 2 and we'll get you rolling with version control.

One addition to version control of documents, templates, chunks wtc would be to have the ability to work with templates, chuncks etc both inside modX and in the file structure. I e when you create a chunk, a psysical file is actually created on the server. I e fully integrated file structure and svn.
There is already something similar to this; when you add for example an css in the file manager you can both update it inside modx and on the server.
Static elements are exactly what you described. They're in 2.2 (nightlies available on the downloas page on the site) and looking good
They allow editing both on server and in manager without having to use include snippets which is how you'd do it in < 2.2.
