I have used the plugin from muddy dog paws, and the fact that it required you to "republish" an article, thereby changing the original publish date, is not ideal, and is not really the type of truly automated solution MODx needs.

I’d like to see a plugin that does for twitter what ditto does for RSS feeds - a true auto publish solution based on a predefined chunk, with selectable URL shortening services just like Twitter Status from muddy dog paws has now.

For many, twitter is delivering where RSS failed in terms of mass pickup of content off site: I think a relly tight, automated solution for pushing content to twitter from MODx will be widely used by the community.

          Snippet http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,34942.0.html

it is an ok step, but we need something automated - it shouldn’t at all be necessary to go to twitter - a huge amount of twitter users never actually use the twitter website anyway, but use one of the multitude of clients available.

I am thinking more like, a plugin or module that allows you to set up in advance your twitter login details, your preferred URL shortener (Twitter Status Plugin already goes this far: http://www.muddydogpaws.com/notebook/auto-post-to-twitter-when-publishing-in-modx.html ), and then also you to add a select to any template. Then when creating a new document, you select the "push to twitter" box and on pubication it automatically publishes for you.

An alternative might be an extension to Ditto which also lets you predefine login and then to any ditto calls that already create your RSS, you add
          &twit=`yes`&twitTpl=`twitTemplate`

I’m not really sure what you are looking for here. The point of my plugin was to allow for a post to be tweeted when it is first published.

If you were to put something in Ditto it would be called on page loads and send out tweets when people load the page.

Maybe I just dont understand what you want. Any more info??

Well, ditto is just me looking for ways to solve a problem, without really being a programmer.

The first, non-Ditto option I said, is just to deal with this (quoted from the Twitter Status page):
Due to how MODx handles the event OnDocPublished, the only way to get this to fire is to right click a document in the tree and select publish. If you save/edit a document the event will not be fired. For this plugin this is actually a good thing so that you do not end up with multiple tweets for the same page.

I am thinking about adding a template variable to each page that gets set when you update your Twitter status. This would then be another check to prevent a document from being sent to Twitter more than once.

I don’t want to have to manually select publish for every article. but now from this discussion I think the solution might be to always set publication on a document for the future (even 5 mins), and then Twitter Status will publish then without another action in the document tree.

So is your typical workflow to set a publish date in the future?

I will have to look and see if the event gets fired when a doc is published that way???

typically, I have from 10-30 posts set for future dates, and this is, at work, multiplied over 8 different MODx installs smiley.

Then, on top of that, we do other posts daily-weekly that are not the type you can auto publish (more personal, topical, etc.).

So yeah, I am just looking to set and forget and just know that posts will go to twitter when they publish, just like I know they will go to the RSS feed (that is why I mentioned ditto + RSS earlier).

                  thanks.

I will see what I can find on future publish dates. I would think there has to be a way to hook into that. I think that would be a nice addition to the plugin.

Does the plugin as currently implemented work for you on the daily items? Seems like it would do what you like as long as you publish from the menu.

yes it does, I just don’t really like the "publish from tree" thing. I guess I am lazy, but I’d rather publish when I save a published document. I understand that "save" is not always "publish", but maybe there is a way to make [save on "new resource" where published = today’s date or earlier] auto publish to twitter - I don’t know.
