document history/rollback and asset management

Hi,

I was just wondering if either/both of these features, which are common in commercial CMSes, are planned for MODx? I vaguely recall reading something about document history being on the cards, but don’t think I have seen anything mentioned about asset management.

At present there is a disconnect between the management of file assets (e.g., images and PDFs) and the management of other content that resides in the DB. Ideally, file assets would be associated with other content in the DB and managed as such. For example:

• Associations b/w a doc and files are automatically created in the DB when file references are inserted in the doc.
• Associations b/w a doc and files are automatically removed from the DB when file references are removed from the doc.
• When deleting a doc that references one or more file assets there should be an option to delete the files (if they are not referenced by another doc) or leave them on the server for future use.
• List all files not currently referenced by any docs and bulk delete them.
• Display a warning when files still referenced by one or more docs are about to be deleted from the server.
• And so forth...

Yes, content revisioning with archiving, as well as more robust document management (vs. content management) are both in development for 1.0. Managing assets that don’t represent markup or script, and the capabilities you are describing for building meaningful relationships between the markup and various rich-media assets are definitely in my vision, as is a mechanism for packaging, distributing, and describing transactional rules for importing and exporting them.
