Anyone think having an IRC channel for modx would be a good idea? Forums are great if you have tons of time, but IRC is better if you need fast help.

That might be true, but who is going to be online on IRC 24/7 to answer all those helps?

There’s no need for any single group to man it 24/7. If we get enough people going to it whenever they feel like it, the channel will naturally populate. smiley Take the #gentoo channel as an example... that’s a wonderful community channel where pretty much everyone helps anyone who asks for help. Let’s go for it! smiley I’m heading over to #modx on freenode right now! smiley

Never having done IRC, I downloaded what seems to be a nice client, and I can see that you are online, but nothing seems to be happening.

:) I’m with you here, but don’t think there should be an OFFCIAL IRC channel. Official suppport should still be centralized to ensure you are providing easily found comprehensive support to users.

More people have access to Web / RSS (IE 7 coming with it too) than IRC.

So unless you can find a way to duplicate the IRC conversations to the web, I still think its a really bad idea for an offical medium.

No worries guys, we’re not going to hide things from anyone via the modx channel. You can participate if you want though; always nice to have options. I actually love it; but then again, I work at home and get lonely only conversing through the forums. laugh

I just discovered irc today ... i like it (a lot)

I wouldn’t consider it as a replacement for the forum ... I’m sure if something good comes out of the irc then somebody will no doubt post it on the forum.

                  Cheers, Garry

I think if you stopped into the IRC forum you would quickly notice that it is not the same kind of discussion that is going on in the forums at all. Mostly today I think we have talked about Football, Mexican Food, a few very broad level conversation questions regarding MODx that can already be found on the forums if they had not come up while "shooting the shit" and some discussion about our personal MODx projects and uses. Not really extra forum material if you ask me. Also, there have already been a few forum topics started that resulted from this much more casual dialog.
