Anyone think having an IRC channel for modx would be a good idea? Forums are great if you have tons of time, but IRC is better if you need fast help.

That might be true, but who is going to be online on IRC 24/7 to answer all those helps?

Another thing to consider as well, when there is a resolution, it’s hard to find it on IRC, unless if we log all the channel, which it’s still hard to find n asnwer from a chat log that is not being able to be viewed threaded as in forum, and titled with specific topic.

      That’s just my two cents.

But I do still believe that it’s better for MODx to have some sort of chat system, in case when we need to sovle problem together and can’t wait to wait for the answer. Instead of using IM, we can use multi chat system. It’ll be a good way for core developer to work together, as well as other member to help each other on real time.

Anybody think that it’s important for MODx? Ryan?

I agree with wendy, a chat system will anyway be an expected plugin/snippet for MODx, we might as well use that when it’s available.

IRC is nice, true, but when you have your hands full it’s kind of hard to work in "synchronous mode", so to speak, to provide support. At least when you have a full time job !

You can always try to IM people you think you can get an answer from (check forum profiles). One nice tool to use for IM is Trillian which supports many IM clients protocol (MSN, Yahoo, AOL, ICQ...).

But yeah I agree a chat system would be something I’d use if we had it on modxcms.com smiley

I’m against IRC channels at the moment ... we don’t have enough folks to "staff" them properly, and if we can’t do it right, we’re not going to do it!

I’m also leaning towards the Gizmo project for dev team collaboration: built on open SIP standards, Mac/Linux/Windows, supports a large number of simultaneous voice/chat conference users and free. Anyone have any experience with it? (http://www.gizmoproject.com/screen-shots.html)

That is so cool, but don’t you think it will be hard for no-english speaking user? I might be one of them, lol. Ehmm... Just kidding... laugh

Anyway, it might good for our core developer though, we can use either chat or voice, so we can still do coding, while we are talking with each other.

Anybody have experience with this? Any other suggestion maybe?

            What about this guys?

Again a nice tool I’ve never heard of... a competitor for Skype ?
It looks very much like it, didn’t give the feature a hardlook though...

Might be nice to try that one for the IM marketing conference next week...

I’ve used it and it works well with local access numbers calling into my Gizmo number smiley in testing at least.

Wired magazine calls it the open source alternative to Skype. Skype limits conferences to 4 or 6 folks I think, so it’s out. And there’s the whole "supernode" controversy now, too...

I’m not sure it’s important to have the IRC channel ’staffed’ with official modx people. Typically, it’s just the people who are doing a thing all day who keep an IRC channel open. The beauty is you can fire off a quick question and get an immediate answer.

                    Ah well...
