You know that if you set your css file to be writable by your web server running account you can use the file manager in MODx to edit the css file just like any file in the editor box.

I tried it today it works just fine!

Yes I think most of us are aware, and used it but it’s not pratical to have to browse to /assets/templates/whatevertemplate/mycss.css each time you need to. I had two windows opened to avoid doing that, but it’s not very nice and I have always been extra cautious to verify which css file I was editing since there is no display of any sort of which file is currently opened...

Anyway, what I’d like is syntax highlighting for CSS editing, that would be top notch !
Or an editor like there is in Textpattern (switchable on/off like for txp).

You can use Content-type and content disposition facility to use modx document as a css file wink.

The only problem with this is when you have friendly URLs enabled with a default suffix, IE is very rude about ignoring the content-type and content-dispositon directives when it feels like it.

Just as a quick update really as I had a email for Westciv. They are working on the next version which will allow the CSS editor (Stylemaster) to provide a proper live preview. This means you can open you CSS on your MODx server in Stylemaster, open a default page to preview in the preview page and as you edit your CSS rules, your see the changes instantly. Once your happy, when you press save, then the CSS file on the MODx server is updated.

This may be beneficial for anyone working on a complex design where visually they want to see the effect immediately without having to save/ reload each time.

Anyway, when I have the next version I will let you know if it works fully

I’m new to modx but have been a long time designer/developer. So far modx is awesome! I’m so pleased that I’ve found this solution, and I’ve made a choice to commit time to getting to know the system.

However, is there a wyswig editor like FCKEditor that writes css rather than html. I’m proficient in css and write all my sites but there are people that will be editing our sites using a wyswig editor. It’s a shame to have to junk up the source with all those html attributes and formatting.

Is there a solution to this that I’ve missed?

Hi, NinthVector! Glad you’re here!

To answer your question about a CSS editor...you’re right...FCKEditor is horrible for writing CSS code. The same applies with TinyMCE, Xinha, and some of the other WYSIWYG online editors out there. I’ve experimented and have tried to find something that would accomodate not only CSS editing but PHP, JavaScript, and any other sort of code editing...but no such luck at the moment.

However, if you had the ability to display just a plain textarea instead of one of the editors then you can at least type in your code without the editors getting in the way. I’ve created a small mod for the default MODx v0.9.1 install, which can be found here:

http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,3217.0.html

This will allow you to select "None" for the editor while editing a page. This is something that will be rolled into the upcoming v0.9.2 of MODx. Hope you like it! smiley

Thanks Jeff! I appreciate it. I’ll check this out and see what I can do with it. I’m learning more and more here as the hours go by smiley

I researched WYSIWYG editors out there a bit, and here’s what I found; although not sure which if any could easily be integrated:

http://www.pixy.cz/apps/webedit/ Pixy? - not sure how well developed this is, but crazy cool demo
http://xstandard.com/ XStandard - Browser-based, and 100% XHTML focused, which makes this an ideal candidate
http://www.westciv.com/ Top Style - top rated commercial script, or if it is web based
hi - as pointed out by another forum member

just trying to consolidate our findings here. please add to this as needed.

yes, NVU wouldnt work really, although it can be browser based if integrated with firefox, however, NVU strips out all not xhtml code, INCLUDING scripts like php and such--this is why I dumped NVU a long time ago.

I’m not really a fan of having this included; I do nearly all my work with just Notepad++ and my eyes, adding a style editor could be nice, as long as it’ll be able to eat hand-made styles (without having preset values like vBulletin).
Pixy looks nice, but works not really intuitive if you ask me, also looks kinda bad so it’d need quite some styling (might be a pro though to implent it, but you get the point, I suppose).
XStandard is nice, but the cool version is paid (which contains absolute need-o-haves if you ask me) and this is a content editor, not really style editor, right?
Top Style is paid as well, not an option.
Eledo: looks ok, but needs a big styling job itself. Works also kinda unhandy if you ask me, judging by a screenshot like this it’d need you to doubleclick in order to change a property...

Another tip shopping cart; don’t put anything after the url, messes them up, now none of them works without an edit job wink (Right way to give it a ’title’ is words to be hyperlinked )
