Would it be possible it integrate a css editor into modx. I am quite new to laying out pages using css but have found the open source tool ’NVU’ brilliant at helping with layout and appearance http://www.nvu.com. However the lack of intergration means a lot of toing and throwing in and out of modx to update the css file on the server.

Yes, That would be quite nice.

One option I turned to which may help, I have started using a version of coffee cup, which sits in the background on my PC and lets me quickly update pages directly on the server. When I need to make CSS changes I do that right in coffee cup and just hit save when I am done and my MOdx site is updated.

I am sure there are lots of different CSS editors that can update your CSS file on the server without the need to download /update the file/ upload if that is what you are doing

edge, do you mean something like dreamweaver software from macromedia?

en8scl, are you using external css or you put all css into the template? It’s better to use external, and link it from your template, this way you can use nvu, dreamweaver, or cofee cup to edit the css.

Ummmmmmm, NVU is a desktop application and MODx is a web application. They can’t be integrated into one another, they can only cooperate.

Funny you mention this, I have been thinking that CSS access in the manager should not be handled through the file manager : it’s inconvenient to edit css that way.

I would I have gladly seen it accessible from Ressources > Manage Ressources. Could either add a tab just next to the template tab or within the template tab, have CSS access just under the hmtl code textarea. It would make working on templates way easier...

Another thought : it would be nice to have css stored in the db, same as for templates. That would not only ensure you don’t have to backup several files each time you move from a test server to a production server, or from one host to another. Plus, it would allow to "associate" a given html template with a stylesheet. Not to mention it could be kind of useful to set a default css for a given template or a template for a given folder and its children.

About what Mark says, I never checked if there was a web css editor ? I’ll check that out, since it would be nice to integrate smiley

In the meantime, use CoffeeCup or Top Style with the upload feature is the best way to go.

You can use Content-type and content disposition facility to use modx document as a css file wink.

...and templates are already stored in the database. no ?

Sorry it was a typo I had written "same for templates" instead of "same as for templates"

That’s a nice call from our moderator, ins’t it? I like that approach, to show the flexibility of MODx that we never thought of in the first place.
