Update : ActiveCollab is going to
switch to a dual license, GPL for basic features, and commercial for enterprise features...
I still think it’s the best (by far) competitor on the project management segment... so much so that I’ll probably stick with it even if it becomes commercial... Unless I manage to set up something with MODx but there are still some things we miss from the repository to build something up to that level.
Now groupware...
it’s amazing to see that there is no lightweight smart open source groupware around (I’ll even start looking for commercial solutions for short terms projects... since I can’t use 37signals hosted solutions -> not localized, I am stuck with whatever is available)... I have spend half a day searching and tried half a dozen things but zilch... actually, I think the future of groupware lies somewhere between the usual groupware stuff (calendar, files, private messages, contacts....), the project management stuff (task management, planning...) and the social software stuff...
Each of those are either to focused for groupware (activeCollab right now falls into this category, though 1.0 is quite promising...), or to wide to be nothing but heavy weight clumsy and ugly software (give a look at groupwares on opensourcecms, they don’t deliver... Streber is nicer but still quite short on my expectations...).
