Ive used Typo3 for 3 sites, and i will never touch it again. Doing the simplest of things, takes TO much time to do!
And once you get over the threshold of learning it, you still have to know the system, in and out completely.
I bet that Typo3 is really good, if you are really dedicated to it.

My friend over att Joomla´s site, just told me about this:
      http://www.joomla.org/content/view/3255/1/
Spawned from his thread about "Bad things with joomla, True or False?".
Now, also featured on the front page of Joomla!

Seems like they have issues and split opinions about Commercial Code And GPL Code.
Apparently there are extensions that have Encrypted code mixed with GPL code.

Is this something that ModX Should worry about to?..

This is something that i think should be very clear to developers and users.

I’ve just been using ModX for a few weeks, but it is so much better than all the other CMS options out there. And know that I’ve installed a dozen of them!

While Joomla and Drupal seem both very mature and extensible, I found their admin section unlogical and smelling of implementation model thinking. And creating something as simple as a custom template was unfun.

Then I came accross ModX, and the clear presentation on the front page really got me into it; It actually made me enthusiastic, like lets go!

And when it came to setting up, it was a breeze, and the admin section a breath of relief. Because of the way its structured, you don’t get to parts you haven’t learned yet. Changing the template was easy after reading the ModX docs. And learning deeper functionality of ModX feels like a gradual path, instead of climbing a cliff. The atmosphere on these forums are great. I have some PHP/DB experience, not a lot, but I think, from reading the forums, that at some point I might actually create something.

ModX is like a swissarmy knife. That is what it is selling it to me.

Joomla and Drupal (and others) constantly nagged me in the sense of "Why do I need to do it like this? Get out of my way."

I know this sounds like a commercial wink , but this has been my experience sofar.

No, this isn’t something MODx should worry about; and has been exhaustively covered already in these forums. There are always split opinions on things people don’t take the time to understand fully; like the GPL. Discussions like this are meaningless and a waste of time IMHO. There is no dynamic linking in PHP, so as far as I am concerned, whatever add-ons you author, you decide how to license and distribute it like you want to. The whole purpose of a framework or platform is to attract developers to it. I’d like to see a gaming platform or cell-phone platform that has a successful market while telling 3rd-party developers they are not allowed to make money on the software they built for it. That’s the whole point...developing a community that shares the benefits of and burdens of the commodity it produces.

A waste of time covered it wink
Well, the people over att Joomla seems think that it´s a very complicated issue.
Covering 17+ pages of continuously split opinions.

Maybe has more to do with joomla as an CMS, rather than a framework.

It’s one of those all-consuming debates that rage constantly all over the place and attract the people with the most extreme positions who make absolutely sure that there will never be any agreement on the subject. There has been a lot of discussion about GPL/not GPL here as well, but at the moment it’s quieted down and the status quo tha Jason describes holds sway. I definitely think it’s better this way, since I agree that I’ve never participated in a discussion on this that truly felt productive.

I’ve never seen a MODx snippet or add-on with encrypted code, either. I have a feeling that would not be very well-received by the community here. I guess we’ll find out if/when some wisearse who thinks their code is so special and perfect that it needs to be protected gives it a shot (but personally I’d waste time decrypting and posting their code before I’d use it).

I think that the atmosphere over at Joomla is just different from here at MODx...

I’d also tried a lot of different CMS systems. I found Typo to be impossible. The Linux of CMS’s!

Both Mambo and Joomla seemed like good ideas until I delved into them and found out the problems of table based layouts that couldn’t be solved totally without hacking them.

The only other option was Wordpress, and that didn’t seem to have the versatility that I required.

Unlike all the other systems I managed to make a rough website with Modx in an evening folowing the basic Wiki guides. I find the system to be so intuitive and logical.

Sure I’ve had problems occasionally, but none that have caused my website to stop working. In fact the only real problem that I have had is currently with 0.96 and the page aliases not working properly. But even then a solution has now been posted.

Modx does suffer from a lack of publicity. I know a few people who have wanted to start database driven sites and I have pointed them towards Modx. They can’t understand how they didn’t manage to find it before! But almost without exception they have loved the way that it operates.

0.97 sounds like it will be incredible.

Further proof that this community is different: On a lot of forums that statement would’ve been an open invitation for a flame war, but here it just makes people chuckle. wink

But typo is "impossible" i spent an incredible 2 weeks to get ONE typo site working with basic needs.
Even then i was to dive into templating and setting up users rights, i must say, it´s built for "worshipers", not users smiley

As time is going by, i have totally given up on Joomla 1.5.
It´s just stalled completely. ModX 0.9.7 seems to be ready long before Joomla 1.5 will be.

I’ve never used Typo. I was referring obliquely to the other side of the equation. I use Ubuntu and really like it, but I hate how fanatical some of Linux’s defenders can be (now I’m inviting flames; luckily that won’t happen here).
