Vanilla has worked pretty well in the past for my needs.
The only ones I’m familiar with are phpBB and vBulletin.
After hearing what kind of shenanigans vBulletin is pulling, I’d stick with phpBB. Just one opinion, though. And a limited one at that.
Although I do like the feature that when composing a response, all the rest of the posts (or some number of them, like the last 10 or so) are shown below the text box. Makes it easy to go back and pick up quotes or verify spellings or whatever from previous posts. Not all bulletin board software has that feature.
vBulletin is one of the most famous solution for providing a forum software to communities. The latest major 4.0 version has been released in the end of the year 2009, and was a great opportunity to revamp and organize the vBulletin softwares suite. Its spam free!
