Which forum software would you suggest?

I used to use ubb.threads back in the day, the moved to vBulletin. I thought my love of vBulletin would never end, but it has... it’s getting out of date, they’ve hiked the price and are now focusing on a CMS system (which I thought was a stupid idea before I even knew MODx!).

They also want me to pay for their new version 4 just to get bug fixes for my old vBulletin, which is just downright outrageous. It’s like saying I have to buy a new car to get manufacturing faults fixed on my old one! So with four licenses, I’m withdrawing them all from vBulletin.

However, what do you use or what would you recommend?

Open source is nice, not essential. But I do want a modern, flexible system.

Suggestions welcome.

SMF is what you’re looking at right now.

I use Phorum, for a simple and complete Forum software.
Not integrated to MODx but works fine...

There are tons out there

The most used are (or used to be) phpBB, SMF, IPB (not free) and vBulletin of course. New ones keep popping up like mushrooms during rain. I’d still recommend SMF or phpBB. I like phpBB better from the two because I’ve used it longer, but SMF 2 is considered better than phpBB 3 (or at least that is the picture I’ve gotten). I have to say that phpBB3 is getting a bit old in internet terms (published in the end of 2007), but the long age must also mean more mods and themes. Interesting fact: if you ask a phpBB user "What is MODX?" they will probably reply by saying:

it’s an XML-based document format developed by the phpBB MOD Team that is used to describe the steps required to modify the source code of a web application in order to install a modification.

Keep in mind that that integration is for the older version of Vanilla and is not compatible with the new version 2, which is a complete rewrite.

SMF probably id the best one .

I’m going with Vanilla; it’s not difficult to theme it to match a MODx template, and it has a shiny new user integration plugin that already has a WP module. I’m getting ready to go for a MODx module for it any day now.

I got the single sign-on plugin for Vanilla figured out, and it turns out to be quite simple.
