VPS recommendation

I’m not sure what your looking to do with a VPS server, but $75/m... Last time I checked you could pick up a VPS for ~$45/m (http://www.wiredtree.com/managedvps/)... Heck, you can even use "10PERCENTOFF" to get more off the price and if you do 6m or 1y renewals you save even more...

Anyways in my mind (and experience to a degree) a VPS server is a nicer route to take than a dedicated box as the processing power (physical servers) can be independent of the storage servers where your "Hard Drive/Space" is located. The reason this is nice is let’s say your processing server dies... There are systems that detect this "death" and will restart your server on another processing server and switch things over automatically so instead of being down for say 4 hours to fix the processing server your only down for 1-2 mins if even that long.

In addition the host just needs to backup 1-5 files to backup your entire server so full backups are more common where a dedicated server they are more likely to charge for backups and in the above example your site would be down as your physical box is replaced.

As for picking what host the best question(s) to ask are along the lines of where is your primary client base? In my case they are in FL and one of the primary ISPs (bellsouth) for my area has an amazing connection to Chicago (WiredTree Datacenter) so for me it’s a prime location to have a server. Sure, I could use a company like RapidVPS located in FL, but my connection to them isn’t as good despite them being closer. (also another good company with reasonable prices) I would be more tempted to use a shared box in Texas (and have two) as I get a better connection than using FL host in this case.

The other thing to consider is the support. I don’t know about you, but support is very important to me. If I have a problem I want to know what’s going on and if I should be using my backup measure to prevent extended downtime. Having a low priority ticket answered in <10mins is great! I can guess how fast a High or Critical ticket is answered and I know the support is behind me.

I have had a VPS at HostForWeb for a few years now. They are considered low cost hosting (I think). My relationship with them is love&hate. I have had very few problems and support is generally very good. However they seem to get a regular amount of VPS servers going into fsck which in some cases can last for hours or even days. I am not sure if they are more prone to have these problems than others or that they are more transparent and admit to these problems more (they post this in the public forum).

I have considered migrating to another server but at HostForWeb i know the potential problems. I get scared of moving only to get bigger problems somewhere else. And the truth is I have not had any down time in years (i am still in shock from the time the server was out for 2 days due to a fsck, but since then it has been great). They used to be small and I even could communicate with the president/owner directly if I needed to, but they have since grown.

Also their affiliate program sucks so I don’t have any incentive to promote them
