VPS recommendation

I’m in the market for a VPS hosting.
currently hosting on mediatemple (gs) and sick of it. was considering their (dv) but seems a bit fucked up to stick with the same company I’m not happy with.
was considering mosso or Lunarpages VPS but would love to hear a word of someone who is happy with his VPS.

any ideas?

I was on mosso and it totally sucked! 2nd worst hosting experience of my life.

2 full weekends of straight downtime.

I’ve got a client on liquidweb VPS and have used their dedicated service and it’s good.

Doing some work on a LiquidWeb VPS at the moment and I’m quite impressed with the setup - did take a bit to get it configured how I wanted it (easy when you know how though ) LiquidWeb’s support is excellent - very quick responses to the issues I’ve had.

Slicehost are also excellent (have a VPS with them for testing) but you do have to wait a bit to get the VPS setup and they are an unmanaged service however the forums are pretty darn good and they have a great wiki that helps with getting the servers configured.

I’ve got some sites on a Wiredtree VPS server. If I recall correctly it was founded by ex liquid web people who did the VPS/Dedi boxes. Support is fast <5 mins on medium/low tickets. It’s managed with root access and if you want extra services fine you don’t lose managed just to have teamspeak running, but it’s your responsibility.

I found their welcome documentation was very helpful coming from shared hosting background and I only needed a few tweaks to the server off the stock config and all was great in my book!

I always thought that MT was a good company with good ideas out of curiosity what issues did you have with them?

I used Liquid web a long time ago and they were pretty good.

I’ve been with MT for about 6 months now. They have great control panel and it used to work super fast when I signed up for about a month or so.
since then they have tons of down time and way too many mysql connection failures. I heard it’s only affecting my ’cluster’ which is #2 but they won’t agree to switch me over to another cluster.
I heard that their (dv) has no issues at all but I feel dummy to sign up for that now. The support is also ridicules, the respond time is okay but the answer for my issues were that they sorry they can’t make it with my high standards and the only solution for me is to upgrade to (dv). quite a nerve.

So after shared hosting fails I figured lets try ’clouds’ and that is totally BS imho and is just another word for shared hosting. don’t think you get any resources when you need them as they state. and now I figured let’s go VPS. I wish I could afford a fully dedicated. maybe Ryan will send me over his old single core machine till then I’ll give a try to VPS first.

Sounds a bit of a nightmare especially their end user support, i’m surprised that they didnt help to move your stuff to a more reliable box.

Lunarpages offer a dedicated server for $100
if VPS is going to cost me ~$75 maybe it’s worth it?

or is it too good to be true?

I have several sites a Lunarpages (no VPS, though). They have been very solid and the support is good.

There are some annoyances, though.
One server I’m on at lunar only got PHP5 in the last week and switching to it trashes your .htaccess file (haven’t seen that anywhere else).
I’ve never been able to create a straight logon to cPanel there via Roboform. It always seems to take at least two separate logins.

I’ve had much better luck with Bluehost (which has an easy cPanel login, switching back and forth between PHP4 and PHP5 in cPanel with no site mods, and a very nice SimpleScripts MODx install). I heard a rumor that they now have VPS. The only annoying thing there is that their web site doesn’t seem to provide any information at all about their various hosting packages. You have to go through the signup process to see them, as far as I can tell.
