Ext 2.0

The folks over at ExtJS are gearing up to release Ext 2.0. You can see samples here:

I am really excited that the MODx manager is starting to move in the direction of ExtJS. I think it would be awesome if the manager had similar desktop functionality to where you could have your Document Tree as a floating window and could have multiple documents, snippets, chunks, etc open in separate windows for editing.

Another nice feature would be if I could also open a window in the manager that had default feeds to "Important News" and "Security Notices" via:

The manager is currently using Ext 1.1rc1...and we wont be using Ext2.0 until it’s publicly released. However, we have built the new manager to allow for something similar to that - drag/drop document trees, elements (chunks/snippets/etc) are now drag/droppable, and a tree-based file manager.

All these are steps toward what you are describing. Hopefully in the future MODx will move toward a window-based feature like that...but we’ll see. The framework developers (Ext/TinyMCE) have to develop code that takes up less memory for us to feasibly add windows. RIght now loading 5+ pages with TinyMCE and Ext running is probably too much for most CPUs.

Thanks for the update both about extJS and how it plays into the new manager... I am quite impatient to see what the future holds !

There are still key problems with 2.0 that has made us decide not to use Ext2.0 for the 097 beta release. We’re going to wait for a reasonably stable version first.

2.0 is also fundamentally different in code structure than Ext1.1, which is what 0.9.7 is currently built on. We would rather not waste a bunch of time rewriting a lot of code to get it into 2.0 for now, especially with all the new features in 0.9.7 and the fact 097’s been delayed for quite some time to get those features and fixes in. Maybe in the next version.

Yeah, I pretty much assumed it would not make it into the 0.9.7 release. However, I think it would be a good match for the 1.0 milestone.

I know that having multiple instances of TinyMCE, etc. in new windows would be extremely memory intensive. As such, emulating the desktop app isn’t practical But man, if the manager is ever similar to the desktop sample app some months/years down the road, I think that would be amazing.
