I started learning about html and designing personal web pages only about 3 years ago. I wanted a way I could change the whole look of my personal site very easily on all pages. (I had no idea what CSS was). I found Etomite. There was a board on the forum that shook some fear into me about eto breaking up and no longer being developed. I stared looking at other ways of designing, and happened to stumble across MODx. It was just like eto, but it had "extras" (god do I love extras!), and the people were actually nice!
In the last year, have transformed from a pseudo web design hobbyist using WYSIWYG editors to make my personal homepage to having a fairly extensive knowledge of XHTML, CSS, and w3c standards. Thanks to encouragement here. I have gone from knowing zero about PHP, to having forum members explain to me comments in a php file and a few basics, to getting my first php book less than 6 months ago, to learning basic programming to now writing modules and snippets! who would’a thunk it? Why. MODx makes it fun. The atmosphere here is very conducive to learning. The software itself is a great reason to learn php and a great way to do it. Our core coders are amazingly talented, and the resources (elements - sorry Jason), are so clean, and looking through them and learning has been such a fun personal experience for me. I can hardly wait for the developments of 2007. (group hug... j/k).
