    Hey guys

I’d like to start using MODx as my standard offering (I’m a web developer) rather than (say) Joomla. I have a project to quote for now, and it’s ecommerce selling kitchen furniture and accessories. Nothing with complex sizing or whatever. But I’m wondering if that’s going to be just fine and dandy with MODx or am I asking too much.

It’s just .. I’m new to MODx so I went to the add-ons under e-commerce and it showed 414 matches for Revolution but the first ecommerce solution only seemed to have 79 downloads.

Am I in the wrong place, or the right place?

    Cheers

      Hi J,

There a few options in regards e-commerce and MODx, you can use FoxyCart (www.foxycart.com) which provides an easy to implement shopping cart with all the checkout security stuff dealt with by them. Or alternatively you can build a custom payment gateway for ShopKeeper http://modxcms.com/extras/package/527, however this looks quite involved at current. ShopKeeper is an interesting project and I will be keen to use it at some point in the future, but however for live client sites I would currently recommend FoxyCart as its the safest and quickest way to build e-commerce sites in MODx.

I previously developed an e-commerce site using Magneto, and while its really good on paper it’s a nightmare to support and customise. With MODx we gain a great CMS which is extremely flexible while FoxyCart makes the whole checkout process easy and secure for customers.

      Hope this helps smiley

For a serious eCommerce dev, I’d rather try something suited for the job such as Magento. Based on PHP - Zend Framework, Magento is one of the most advanced, dynamic and promising eCommerce containers out there. And it’s got a compact CMS administration interface for managing non-product pages, if you like.

I personally use MODx for quick and flexible solutions, but ability to extend into an eCommerce application using packages like ShopKeeper sound good and might be worth trying.

I’d like to see a decent ECommerce solution for modx but until Revo is released there is little point in development of modifying Evo to suit.
Foxy cart is okay but very basic and limited in features. May be okay for a simple site.
Magento I found limiting as well although it is okay for basic sites if you happy with THEIR ideas of use and layout.
Virtuemart is reasonably powerful and versatile based on Joomla CMS and has lots of addons available etc, BUT is a resource hog at times and bloated. It works okay if you need stock control and order management etc.

Have you tried Drupal with Ubercart?

Gosh, sounds like there are lots of possibilities, I guess I’ll have to take a good look. Loving the suggestions though, and if anyone wants to ’second’ any that would be good smiley

FoxyCart is sorta a different approach than many others... it basically lets you do your own CMS and database thing on whatever system you want, but when you order something, it posts to their system. Most of the other options try to handle the database and CMS thing from within the CMS instead of posting remotely.

Magento is a popular eCommerce CMS and it’s a good eCommerce platform, but it’s very limited as a CMS. E.g. changing layouts or templates is MUCH more difficult in Magento than it is in MODx, but it does offer lots of standard eCommerce things for tracking your products and sales.

This a common topic, and one with many many different opinions and solutions.

I must admit, this http://www.commercestyle.com/e-commerce/magneto-sucks has rather put me off Magento
