PDF User Guide

Does anyone have a User guide for MODx, were handing the CMS over to the client and altho they are happy with the system and how it works they would like a guide for future reference, i am in the process of writing one but its a way off yet as im having to move it around with other jobs and i was wondering if anyone had done it previous?

There’s this http://wiki.modxcms.com/index.php/Portable_documentation. It is taken from the documentation available from modx website. I’m not sure this is the type of user guide you are referring to? Anyway, hope it helps.

Im going to print that out anyway but it was more for End users (ie none technical clients)

Mne is underway and ill post it when its done, as bad as itll probbaly be =]

Good morning everyone,

I’m also a newbie to MODx (started on 3 September) and needed a good, in-one-place, written-for-end-users-only guide to MODx. I couldn’t find one so, in the interest of learning a great deal myself while writing it, I decided to write my own.

The UNFINISHED [as of 4 September] PDF file is here: MODx Content Editor Guide[BETA] (for MODx v1.0.0)

What’s unfinished, you ask?

• Section IV.2. ("Using Resources") isn’t written
• The whole thing needs to be proof-read.
• Formatting needs to be cleaned up / standardized (bold, underline, italics, caps)
• Still needs screenshots in some areas

This document assumes that the user is a "content editor" with a role with the following permissions:

General: All.
Content Management: All.
Template Management: None.
Snippet Management: None.
Chunk Management: All.
Plug-in Management: None.
Module Management: None.
Event Log Management: None.
User Management: None.
Web user management: None.
Permissions management: None.
Roles management: None.
Configuration Management: Use file manager, Manage Site META Tags/Keywords, Import HTML


Feedback very welcome, as it’s still in progress and thus easily editable I’d love to have a polished product before the end of the month.

Are you the one who posted a request for a content-editor’s guide on tweeter? I recall reading something to that effect.

Hopefully will give you better feedback when I have gone through it...

Once you are done, it will be better to start a new thread about this....am sure it will be stickied too

Yup that’s me...I think I write fantasy/fiction under another name, and my twitter account (tcdale) is based on that. But, I twitter about web design stuff, too, obviously.

Glad I’m going in the right direction for the documentation. In a previous life I used to write user manuals and "how-to" documentation, which is the approach I’m taking for this document. Hopefully at the end of the month I can hand it off to my client with a "here’s everything you need to know."

I’ve also started on an "Administrator’s"-side guide, but I’m (for now) investing much less effort in that, since I think MODx’s administrative functions are fairly obvious ("Use friendly URLs?" Why yes, thank you), and an administrative user should be more comfortable with Googling to get the documentation. We’ll see how much time I have left after the actual website/conversion process is done.

And yes, I really am a newbie I’m a web designer/developer by trade, but I’d never heard of MODx before September.
