Complete Tutorial

Is there a complete ModX tutorial available ? We are evaluating CMS’( Drupal, Joomla, and ModX) and I cannot locate a comprehensive tutorial covering everything from install, template build, site implementation and management. I like the concept of ModX but will be basing our decision on the amount of support resources available.

There is off course the:

Manual and the ever growing wiki and the most valuable resource,.. (you’re looking at it), the active community.

I don’t know what your understanding is of a ’complete tutorial’, but the above resources should get you going pretty quickly. MODx is easily installed and once you’ve got your head around it way of operating (templates,chunks,snippets & plugins) you’ll find that adapting it to your needs is a relative breeze. And when you get stuck an answer is mostly only a forum post away.

Ah, I remember finding these, although they might be a bit outdated (As of Dec 26th, 2006 per the download). Still, another drop in the bucket:

I’m sure alot of people will agree with me when I say this tutorial is not extensive enough! I’m surprised to see such a helpful forum but many times I wish there was more documentation on MODX topics.

Is there any chance there will be an ebook covering everything in MODX coming out soon?

About Wiki, I wonder if it’s possible to have the date for each article so that we can tell whether a tutorial is outdated or newly added/edited. I think this is especially useful once Modx moves to V0.9.7 and beyond.

Probably can’t do anything about it for the existing articles, but how about the new articles?

There is a book planned for MODx 0.9.7, but remember that MODx is pretty much an all-volunteer project so people have to work on things in their spare time and are often pulled away from MODx projects by the vicissitudes of "real life."

Sure you can. It is easy to check to see when the article was last edited by looking at the change date in the "history" tab at the top.

The wiki needs work and is not designed to be official documentation (which is in the works as we speak.) The wiki needs people to go in and register and make changes to bring the stuff up to date. I have made changes in the last few days to some articles here and there but it is meant to be a user contributed documentation system--a Wiki.

Official documentation for upcoming releases of MODx will be better and more organized but team focus is on getting 0962 and 097 out the door. There have been dramatic changes in the way documentation is being built and hopefully a book in conjunction with the release of 097 to get people up and running with MODx and to do some common setups.

Again I recommend--especially to those of you who feel confident to answer posts here and to help others--that the Wiki is waiting for you to add to it. If you see yourself answering the same question time and time again on the forum. Wiki it. If you are using the wiki and there is an error correct it. If you are unsure, use the Wiki Talk pages to ask questions.
