PNG transparency help

Hey folks, I’ve checked out a few of the fixes for the old PNG transparency issue and I still need some help with it. Some of my work uses transparency and they are called from a CSS file and the PNG fixes don’t work as such. I’ve looked at the iepngfix one but it’s a bit flakey in IE6 as it doesn’t always load. I’m using the htc file in my assets folder and sometimes it’s stopping IE from loading and coming up with an error but disappears when I refresh. I know that IE6 is old as the hills but there’s probably still a lot of people using it and I would like to have them covered.

So i need a solution for PNG fix for IE6 that works with transparent images and images called on from a CSS file. Is there anyone that can help me? Thanks.

For some reason it’s stopping my javascript menu working in IE 6 and 7 but it’s fine in opera and FF. What could be the problem?

My IE PNG Rx of choice has been a php script written by Justin Koivisto (http://koivi.com/ie-png-transparency/)—which has been converted into a modx plugin here: http://www.modxcms.com/PNG-Alpha-Transparency-for-MSIE-1.0-0.html. There is an updated version of the script itself on Justin’s site as well.

The only thing this method cannot do is apply the fix to an image specified in an external css file. But then again, I haven’t come across any that can ... Hope this helps!

Yeah, I had similar problems with other javascript in a site where frankensleight was deployed. Same problem with bgsleight. We ended up customizing the script so it didn’t go through the entire DOM of the page, targeting very specific elements. It doesn’t seem to break everything now, and is much much faster that way as well.

Also, make sure your page is fully validated. If the pages have any validation errors, it’s very possible this could be wreaking havoc with the MS "browsers". Ironic that the solutions necessary to fix IE are breaking IE, isn’t it? >:(

bgsleight and frankensleight both do, but will require non-trivial effort to utilize alongside other scripts, as I’ve discovered.

the pages I was using the script on are 100% validated XHTML strict documents so it shouldn’t cause problems. Is there anyway you could provide me with info on how to get it working correctly with IE 6 and 7? I don’t know JS at all so wouldn’t know what to do to get it working. Thanks

frankensleight is great, but it screws my jQuery effect which is strange considering I use jQuery with noconflict()

I have tried various methods but none are really satisfactory... I’ll try Raymond’s plugin again but I remember being unable to use it last time I tried...

Edit: well, well, I just found this jQuery plugin : pngFix.js and it does work very well
There are a couple of others but I like this one better because :

• it’s unobtrusive
• it works also with CSS-Backgrounds
• it works with PNG-Images within Links

Yeah well there are a few plugins around, the first google result was ifixpng didn’t sound as well implemented.

Maybe worth checking into...
