Common causes of error 404 in ModX?

-it’s a 404! (Page Not Found)-

shows up quite often on my test site, when I click on a link..it may show up..but if I go back and click on that link again it works.

It acts as if its misfiring, so to speak.

So Im trying to find documentation that may reveal the circumstances in which this happens, both common occurances and the more rare ones.
It would certainly help me figure out what the problems is and may help others as well.

if someone could move it the appropriate place if necessary I would appreciate it.

One of the things that may be causing this is permissions on your /assets/cache directory. If MODx can’t read them your pages will not show up and will cause a 404. This would also account for the pages showing up one day and when you edit them they show up again.

After re-reading your post though, I would say that it is likely the Friendly URLs settings in your .htaccess that is causing this. You should check to make sure that the base url is pointing to the correct folder and also try to see if the it works on certain pages and not on others.

To figure this out more please send a link or tell us if these are links to pages within your site or if they are links to external pages, or both. Are you using FURLs. Do you make any changes to the pages?

Perhaps someone else might offer some suggestions.

I do not have friendly urls on..as Im not sure Im on apache..

was that for a specific template in the demo content?

hmm had a chance to recently start working on this again..
So odd. Its driving me nuts.

Are there any other possibilities?

I recently wrote my web host asking them to double check some permissions for me.
It happens less often..but it still happens.

Still developing inside a subfolder..
Some of my settings:
-Im not using Friendly URLs
-Rewrite Browser Paths-On

SOmething tell me now though it may be a perm issue. So double checking with the host again.

Ok my web host is telling me that all permissions are set as I requested.
I just don’t understand whats causing this..
It’s about to make me give up I tell you.

Im developing the site in a subfolder and have the base url defined.

I thought it was wayfinder at first, so to test my theory I used absolute urls in the navigation for the templates.
But the problem still arose!

Im using three templates, each slightly different for the various sections of the site.

Anyone have any ideas..Im at a loss.

Without a link to the site, some generated page source, or some more detailed information about your templates, I’m afraid there’s really nothing anyone can do but guess here.

BTW, what do you mean when you say you have the base_url defined? This should be auto-determined by MODx...

Oh ok, I guess I thought it was maybe more a common problem but now it seems like it may be more unique to me.

I wonder if its because maybe its on a windows server?
I think whats frusterating me is most likely less a problem with modx and more a lack of communication with my webhost.

Im going to look over the modx requirements again, send a note one more time to the webhost and make sure things are up to par.

I manage other cms tools such as xoops or wordpress with a different webhost that gives me more hands on control, but this particular one Im relying on the webhost that my freinds are using for their site.

was trying to feel it out and see if it was any sort of common error, as in if people encountered before.

(Im still in the experimental stage with it so Im afraid I was too embarrassed to post it as it is still a bit of a mess. Just testing it , basic layout etc. But this issue kinda put me to a grinding halt, as I’ve wanted to fix it before progressing further.)

So again-when I click on the links from the main horizontal nav..all appears fine...but every, I dunno, 5th click I get the 404 page...once getting that error page, I refresh...and the page it was supposed to show, shows up. weird.

ok still havent figured this one out.

Some more solutions Im going to try before returning here for support:

-Try absolute urls for the main menu-
--perhaps wayfinder is failing me here?--

Move the dev site out of the sub folder and into the main site root.
Will this make a difference? We’ll see.
