Javascript/Ajax library standard?

Im not shure if it´s such a good idea to combine different javascript libraries. (Relating to the ajax search)
Doesn´t modx already include scriptabulous?

Why not settle with the javascript library with the cleanest codes and the biggest
user community? That way support wont be a problem, and plugins will fall in with
a steady pace. I am of course talking about Jquery, that have matured alot more than mootools.

It is indeed not desirable to combine different javascript libraries in the backend. MODx has moved from scriptaculous to mootools but there are still some legacy scriptaculous instances. You’ll see these will likely disappear when snippet/plugin developers catch up. If that’s not going fast enough feel free to dig in and post some solutions

So, you’re a jQuery fan. Well you have found yourself a friend in that, so am I... Even so, mootools is a stable and interesting library and more importantly the MODx team have made their choice so unless there’s a change of heart you may have to learn a bit of mootools if you want to fiddle with the backend.

As for the frontend, feel free to use whatever library you like. I mainly use jQuery there and where there is a clash I (re)write snippets to suit.

There is absolutely nothing the matter with jQuery at all. In fact, there’s more than a lot to like about it.

We made our choice based on the performance/scalability issues partially, but mostly to choose a library that would help us loose the legacy stuff in the manager (webelm.js and the ilk). That and the fact that I was honestly more familiar with mootools. Now that that the legacy stuff is mostly purged and things have been made to use another libary, there’s lots of interesting possibilities to think about.

Maybe I’m just getting old and crotchety, but I’d say that if y’all had decided to go with jquery, we’d be getting people wondering why we aren’t using the wonderful MooTools libs!

I’ve been old and crotchety for a while now, and I’m sure you’re right. I still use jQuery scripts all the time, and it’s not a problem as long as I don’t also use QuickEdit (which I don’t personally use anyway). Maybe we should make the old version of QuickEdit available for people who want a non-mootools option?

Sorry to disturb your discussion ... Just want to contribute my 0.2 €:
I started to use ModX in December. I loved the possibilities (and still do so) and started to use the Javascript library distributed with it - scriptaculous. OK, I had a hard time then (never heard anything about Ajax and web 2.0 before, I am an designer, no programmer ...). I was really happy, when 0.9.6 came with mootools, because there is much more and better documentation. Now I am comfortable with mootools and there are discussions to move toward another package??? For people like me, which want to have an "easy to use, modify and understand" CMS (like ModX is today and seems to improve more and more) it is absolutely necessary, that all official releases are just with one technology and not with two different ones (which can do the same but work with another syntax - and disturb each other).
Everybody can use whatever technology he wants ... but I really hope, that the repository will become a "one javascript library place". Not to limit the possibilities but to enhance the compatibility ...


PS: could somebody teach the forum-spellchecker that "ModX" is not wrong ;-)

Actually, it’s MODx...

We’re not discussing changing the default installed library, just discussing libraries.

Anybody writing snippets or modules is free to use whatever libraries suits their fancy. MODx in no way restricts one’s creativity!

OK, it seems that I still have to learn how to write MODx ;-)
And discussing libraries is great ... I was just afraid that the use of different libraries (in the repository) could really slow down the great way of "ajaxifying MODx".


PS: the Spellchecker prefers "Mods", nothing else ...

This is why i moved from mootools to Jquery.

- Because of smarter object handling it wont collide with other Javascript´s.
