i see this has been talked about, apologies in advance still not getting it. am setting up a test modx site on godaddy, found the thread about needing your database details handy when you get to installing modx. tis my first time at something like this so pls be kind...
database name [ok, i know this one, or do i think what goes in here is for db login name?]
table prefix [do i leave this as ’modx_’ ?]
collation [am not gonna touch this one]
database host [this is where i’m putting in ’p41mysqletcetc.secureserver.net’]
db login name: [same as db name above?]
db password: [no worries with this]
am getting ’Connection to host: failed!’ no matter what permutation of this info i try...
help?

The name of the database may not be the same as your username for logging in to the database. Usually the database name is some permutation of your domain name and your login name; mine for one host was sottwe_sottwe, since I always go by sottwell, and my domain is of course sottwell.com, but they only used the first six letters.
Collation is not a big deal, are you using utf-8 or one of the iso-8859 character sets? Once you can get a connection, you’ll be able to select from a list of what’s available for your database; the list varies depending on the configuration of MySQL. Collation itself has to do with how things are sorted; in some languages A may not be the first letter of its alphabet, and in others the same letter can be in a different location in a sorted list depending on the region. Alphabets like Hebrew, even in utf-8, can be complicated by the fact that there are no vowels, but vowels can be indicated by dots and various other little markings, or not. This can complicate sorting, and using the correct collation type is important. In English, it doesn’t really matter.
The prefix can be anything you want; it will be prepended to all of the MySQL tables, so if you have only the one database and want to run the SMF forums as well, you can have modx_users and smf_users; both users tables, but no confusion because of the prefix.
thank you so much for your email, today is my first day of hitting a forum and i’m stunned at how helpful people are...
do you think then to find the name of my database that’s something i need to ask godaddy for?
relating to ’are you using utf-8 or one of the iso-8859’... i had to google that to try to understand the question... and... i don’t know... [i can design static websites only for cms ones i’ve had the good fortune of a programmer who makes them ’work’, am trying to learn to do it myself hence what i’m sure is my remarkable ignorance].
i think i’ll ask godaddy for the database name as i’m not seeing any more details other than the ones i mentioned below. would that sound like a plan?

All MODx needs is the basics: server, database name, username, password. It uses standard PHP mysql functions for connecting and selecting a database.
