Ok, we have a dedicated virtual setup at Mediatemple and just recently, having problems using the manager for modx. The initial setup of modx and the site(s) went fine. However, recently when trying to access the manager we get a black screen. Sometimes if you refresh the login screen appears. You try to log in, same thing, blank screen - hit refresh and not all the frames show up.

I’ve checked file permissions etc. everything there seems to be in order. I’ve checked the log files and seems that the server for whatever reason cannot find the include files - here is a section from the errof log file:

Others with dedicated virtual accounts have been reporting the same problems recently. It appears that the dv accounts do not allow set_include_path() function for some reason, and MODx does not support configurations that do not allow this. IMHO, if this is a dedicated virtual server, there is absolutely no reason for this feature to be disabled in PHP. Someone really needs to bring this to MT’s attention. I run on their GS service with no problems. Very odd configuration they’ve chosen...

Interesting - We also are on their GS service and have no problems there but just recently setup a DV and this is happening with two sites transfered from the GS to the DV and with a new fresh site as well. I’ll have to start a support ticket with the MT people - hopefully they won’t say ’it’s your box and your on your own here’

        We’ll see.

        Thanks for the insight.

        - Is this something that can be changed via php.ini file or is this something configured when compiling php?

Another question - is this something that can be fixed either by me editing the code for modx or via php.ini file? Or unless I get help from the MT support team am I SOL on this?

I’ll bet they are using php_admin_value include_path in the Apache configuration, which you cannot override in htaccess with php_value or in scripts with set_include_path. See http://blog.calevans.com/2008/02/14/set_include_path-failing/

So, I take it this is something that the Mediatemple support staff will have to change if they are willing to recompile/install Apache/PHP . . . I’ve created a support ticket but haven’t seen a response yet . .

Well, here is the response from the MT support team - seems this is the way it has to be due to PLESK. Anyone have any suggestions? I don’t completely understand what if anything they are suggesting me to do . .

The php_value directives for apache can be used on either server, but php_admin_value can only be used on the (dv). The difference between them is summarized in this response to a PHP mailing list:

                http://osdir.com/ml/php.devel/2002-10/msg00989.html

Basically, you can use php_admin_value directives in the httpd.conf (more usually the vhost.conf on our (dv)s ) only, but php_value works for .htaccess files or in the main apache configuration. On the (dv), you have to override many domain-specific PHP variables with php_admin_value because that is the directive used by Plesk’s automated apache configurations to set them in the first place, and php_values can not override php_admin_values.

The test you ran succeeded, according to the PHP manual ( http://us.php.net/set_include_path ), which states that set_include_path "Returns the old include_path on success or FALSE on failure." In the case of the (dv), there was simply no path other than "." specified for your default include_path.

If you would like to enable PEAR for a domain on your (dv), you can do so as documented here:

                http://kb.mediatemple.net/article.php?id=514

You could then include the path to PEAR in your include_path as well.

If you have any further questions regarding your (mt) Media Temple services, please feel free to contact us any time.

Translation: they are basically saying that you’re SOL because Plesk requires them to use php_admin_value which prevents set_include_path from being able to change this setting at runtime. This is required by MODx, and several other PHP frameworks I’m familiar with. Seems MODx is not compatible with MT’s dedicated virtual accounts due to this. Is Plesk required software on these dv accounts? If you don’t have any other options for configuration of the virtual server, I’m not sure you have any options other than to try and hack MODx to work in this environment (i.e. fix all the manager paths dependent on having direct access to ./manager/includes/).

This is very frustrating as I just had to migrate away from MT because of this issue. I don’t think there is another option other than PLESK. It’s too bad, MT just lost my business. Hopefully someone at MT will figure out a better way or someone here will find an answer.

Actually, after reading that KB article, it looks like you have access to manually edit the vhost.conf file where the open_base_dir settings may actually be causing this problem. Try it with the open_base_dir setting off as described in the KB article and see if that solves the problem.
