    I’m very pleased with Clook.
Their website says that they offer PHP4 and MySQL4; Do you have more recent versions of these on your account?

Funny you should say that... I just asked them last night via the helpdesk to upgrade my VPS to php 5.2.4, and within 5 minutes I had a response, and within the hour had it done. They are in the process of upgrading all their shared servers to this as well; they’ve had it available as a secondary (via .php5, or switching with the .htaccess file) for some time now.

Actually I could have done it myself, since I have SSH access to my server, but I keep changing my IP address every time my ISP packs up and I have to reset my router, and then Clook has to change the allowable IPs for SSH access... it’s a lot easier to have them do it!

At Lunar Pages, I have a button in cPanel to enable/disable php5.

I haven’t actually used it so I’m not sure how that’s implemented.

I am with Media Temple but have sent many clients to Hostgator. For the price it offers, Hostgator is one of the top best shared hosting. Customer services are excellent and the tech support staffs are knowledgeable. It’s located at Texas therefor not so much worry about the power blackout like (mt), dreamhost where the datacenter is at Southern California. The only main reason I didn’t go with Hostgator myself is because I personally don’t care much about Cpanel, but I’d been thinking about it lately, as I realized the value it offers is much better than the pricey (mt).

To revive and make a suggestion for the green hosting problem, I’d really suggest skipping the whole issue and getting a rock-solid, known reliable host. Then you can purchase your own carbon offsets – heck maybe even exceeding your carbon contribution and becoming super-green – so you can have the same effect and a known player in a mission critical area of infrastructure.

              That is good advice.

I agree. This is most likely what we’ll do from now on, unless we get some strong recommendations for AISO. Hosting isn’t the only thing that these folks do that uses energy, of course, so they could purchase sustainable electricity and carbon offsets for all their energy consumption this way.

MediaTemple.net has been great in the several months I’ve been with them. And they are darned fast!

Mark, what type of plan do you have with MediaTemple?

Last year, I moved my reselling account there (I have 20 domains to host) but quickly ran into a memory problem - my server and all 20 sites was crashing daily. At MediaTemple’s request, I upgraded my account twice just to keep all my domains online. This ended up being more expensive than my original plan, so I left them and went back to my reselling plan with BlueGenesis. I was very sad about this because I liked MediaTemple’s control panel and the fact that they allowed ion_cube loaders (which was why I wanted to leave BlueGenesis).

I’m still looking for a better reseller hosting plan... and wondering what happened with MediaTemple.

I’m still using 1&1 because I don’t have a lot of high bandwidth needs.

But just about anytime I see a discussion of host companies, Rack Space comes up as one of the number one picks.
http://www.rackspace.com/ I assume they must be pretty great for high demand situations. But, maybe you pay for that level too. I don’t know.

However, if I were selling space to other companies, I think I would probably look at Mosso. The built in invoicing abilities and client management looks very cool.

I haven’t chimed in here but I have come across many hosts over my 10years plus hosting sites and I can say that for shared hosting I am very happy with Hostdime. While they are a vanilla cPanel host who offers shared, shared reseller, VPS and dedicated servers (I am using shared reseller for my clients) they have real 24/7 support and even though there have been downtime issues in the past they are responsive and you can call and talk to someone who can fix your server quickly (save for a server fire which took 3 days to restore from tape).

I have also had good relationships with blacksun.ca and recently came across a host that offers nothing but virtual dedicated servers for a low price and you can basically host anything you want at jumpline.com. Their servers seem fast and customer service is pretty good.

One I have had nothing but trouble with is netfirms.com/.ca they offer cut-and-paste support and blame customers for overuse of servers but can’t provide logs of problem scripts or even the resource or access activity.

                      Hope this helps.
